It's incredibly dated, but that's part of why it was such a huge success.

Esp comparing to his side--projects in the late 70s,,,,like Norma Jean's debut nod

But it just goes to show you how versatile the man is.

He did the soundtrack/score for Eddie Murphy's Living In America too, I believe hmmm

Probably one of her top 4 albums for me, but then again it was my first cassette ever. I like her R&B-ish albums the most.

So you like (like me) Bedtime Stories, Madonna and Hard Candy???

I'm surprised people don't pick up more on the r+b feel of "Like A Prayer". And it has the closest to a live band sound of all her records.

The title track is almost gospel.

"Express Yourself" is straight up soul.

"Love Song" is Princely funk.

"Cherish" is almost girl group-ish.

"Keep It Together" is a Sly sendup.

Of course, it has a few piano ballads, Spanish excursions and a weird experiment to distract from the fact. But to me, it's one of her least dancey and most organic records.

I love about 5 songs on it so much, with the title track being the best, but I don't like the rest.

That would be the other one I consider her more R&B-ish.

Alot of people would think of this as her most rock oriented album, but when you put it like that i see what you mean. I guess due to the live feel, and the heavier guitar than on most records, ive always thought upon it as a rock style album, but i guess in reality, its the album that draws on the most musical styles and influences.

Oh Father is supposed to be her tribute to Simon & Garfunkel, Dear Jessie gets many Beatles/Sgt Peppers references, Promise To Try is a little bit Elton, Keep It Together good as samples Sly & The Family Stone, Cherish is girl group / motown, Till Death Us Do Part has quite a rock sound, Express Yourself in its original form is a horn fuelled RnB number, and yes Like A pRayer is almost gospel with a big fat bass line for good measure. Strangely, considering the musical climate of the time, theres nothing id consider straight house or dance on there - she'd let the remixers do that.

In fact this is kind of the record she needed to get out of her system before she could start making albums that were a little edgier. Its no surprise she felt like she could go and record Erotica after this (and Im Breathless). She described this writing the lyrics as a cathartic process, but i guess it is musically as well. Like she put to bed all the music of her child hood and could now look forward. She hasnt made such a backward looking record (apart from Im Breathless) since.

wow, I like that. I gotta give this album another spin. But unfortunately apart from the title track, EY, KIT and Cherish I don't like the rest. Love Song is a huge disapointment imo. A funky song would have been cooler. What about one of his outtkes from that time like Bliss or something?

Prince experts what funky fast songs did Prince have in his vaults in 1988 (when the album was written and recorded)
