This was several of the songs Motown had Brenda do after the departure of Mary Wells. This one was a hit for Brenda, reaching #25 on the pop chart and #13 on the R&B chart in early 1965.

I love Brenda but Mary's version is better.

I agree.

This was actually the LAST song Mary recorded at Motown before she left. She had JUST turned 21!

Brenda was known for being sexy, but Mary's version is way sexier to me.

But Mary could always pull off that "I just fucked you over" strut ("You Beat Me To The Punch" is another shining example) that Brenda couldn't. That's why the song works better for her.

Brenda didn't sound perfectly right with that song. I prefer "Just Look What You've Done" over her version of Mary's song. That song (JLWYD) is a knocker by comparison. dancing jig

And you damn right about Mary pulling it off. That voice was sassy as fuck!

nod She had more hits too. You just inspired me to create a Mary Wells tribute thread. People were ignoring the first one I did. lol

In fact Brenda did a LOT of Mary Wells tunes (maybe that's one of the reasons she later left Motown in 1968). She did Mary's "I'll Be Available" and "Operator" (a modest hit for Brenda). Berry Gordy reportedly signed her because he caught her singing "My Guy" at a store.
