LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued British band Coldplay, accusing the Grammy-nominated stars of plagiarizing one of his songs.

Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."

The 52-year-old guitar virtuoso is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.

Coldplay, whose soaring atmospheric tunes are often compared to those of Irish rock band U2, received seven Grammy nominations on Wednesday, second only to rapper Lil Wayne.

Among its mentions were nominations in the key record and song of the year categories for "Viva La Vida," which comes from the band's chart-topping album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends."

The song is credited to the band's four members, singer Chris Martin; bass player Guy Berryman; guitarist Johnny Buckland; and drummer Will Champion. The title was inspired by a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The Satriani track comes from his album "Is There Love in Space?" Further comment from Satriani's attorney, or reaction from Coldplay's management was not immediately available.

The Jimi Hendrix estate and the James Brown estate could quite easily sue Princes little ass for millions, cos he virtually stole everything from them lock, stock and barrel!!!!!

He could b called the fake ass James Brown, or the fake ass Jimi Hendrix!!!!

The fact is that everyone steals from everbody else and in some cases it can b show of flattery and honour!!

Im a big satch fan and i didnt hear this in the Coldplay song even though i've heard the thing loads of times. Yeah they're similar but i don't think its enough to sue the band.

The thing is, Brian Eno produced the whole Viva La Vida project and I dont think he, being a world reknowned producer, would suggest 2 Coldplay that they use other peoples music!! He is too much of an original and unique producer to do things like that!!! Also, I think Brian Eno, being a veteran in the music business, is totally clued up to all the legal implications to even suggest something like that!!!

Wow!! I'm one of those who actually love Viva La Vida, and a fan of Coldplay.

Listening to the Satriani's version (which kicks ass!), i think Coldplay has a lot of explaining to do.

The only reason i think the RadioHead comparison has come was because of magazines like Spin and Q and things like that, that all of a sudden were giving Coldply these "honors" that they were giving RadioHead the years before. But if the truth be told, Coldplay and there sound at times owes ALOT to a-Ha and they have spoken on it many times, even Radiohead and U2 have stated the a-ha influence on themselves. But people dont really get that since MOST of america doesnt even know that a-Ha has 9 albums not 1, and tthat there sound changed drastically after the 80's. Snow patrol and Keane are 2 others that have had the a-Ha "influence" big time.

I hope they paid Kraftwerk for ripping "Computer Love" on their song Talk
