Remembering MC Breed, A True Hip-Hop Pioneer

Published by MTV News on Saturday, November 22, 2008 at 11:01 pm.
By Shaheem Reid & Sway Calloway

Legendary on the West Coast for solo classics such as “Ain’t No Future in Yo’ Frontin’”
and collaborations with superstars such Tupac Shakur (”I Gotta Get Mine”), Flint, MI native MC Breed died Saturday, his publicist confirmed. He was 36 years old.

Breed was rushed to the hospital in early September for kidney failure. The rapper was on life support for two days before slightly recovering.
In late September, he conducted a phone interview with his publicist Jonathan Hay where he talked about his health crisis.

“The doctor told me my kidney was insulted and stopped filtering what I was taking in,” Breed said at the time.

Breed also talked about coming with a new album, boasting his skills were as sharp as ever. Before he passed away, Breed was in the process of inking a deal with Ichiban Records, according to his camp. His rep also tells us Breed’s album was to be called “Mc Breed - The Original Swag” and had lined up features from Too-Short, Erotic D, Ant Banks and others. The D.O.C was also writing records with him.

Our very own Sway Calloway was a friend of Breed and definitely has fond memories of some of their interactions. Here, he gives a little insight to his buddy as an artist and person.

I can honestly say that no rapper at the time made more people aware of the Midwest than MX Breed. The songs “Future in Your Frontin” and “Gotta Get Mine” with Tupac exploded around the country like an e-mail blast! I played “Future in Your Frontin” every day on KMEL. People in the Bay initially thought he was from there! The Dr. Dre-styled beat was competitive with street anthems around the country, but his lyrical delivery had an early universal swagger. He talked about a region in this country that was still trying to break through. It was refreshing, and the video was an introduction to a new world. Breed was important to the evolution of the rap game because he proved that Midwest rappers can make hits and sell records. He put Flint on the map. Breed, Common, Twista, Crucial Conflict, Da Brat were some of the early pioneers to open doors for the Midwest. I’m glad I had a chance to interview him at a time when his career was first taking off.

One more soldier to R.I.P.

Good to see a Flintstone getting love. He lit up many a speakerbox.

Shame, but as you said, he got to see the White House black. Seemed so impossible back then but look at us now.

Ya'll KNOW Ain't No Future, In Yo Frontin' was my SHIT!!!

Wow, RIP Breed. rose

Rapper MC Breed dies at friend's home at age 37

11/24/2008 1:18 PM, AP

It was in the gritty, blue-collar city of Flint that Eric Breed grew up amid the dimming opportunities of a declining auto industry.

That starkness was vivid in the lyrics of what would be the rapper's biggest hit, 1991's "Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'."

Breed, known professionally as MC Breed, died Saturday at a friend's home in Ypsilanti, about 30 miles southwest of Detroit, a Washtenaw County medical examiner's spokesman said Monday.

Toxicology reports were pending, but no foul play was suspected in the 37-year-old's death.

Breed had suffered from kidney failure, according to The Detroit News and The Flint Journal.

"More than just an artist, we mourn the loss of a beloved father, son, brother and friend," his family said in a statement. "We are thankful and blessed to have been in his presence and want him to be remembered for his creative, caring, talented and hardworking spirit."

Breed released 13 albums from 1991 to 2004, and collaborated with artists such as Tupac Shakur and Too Short.

He moved to Atlanta in the 1990s, but always identified with his tough Flint roots.

The lyrics from "Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'" included: "I'm from F-l-i-n-t'n. A city where pity runs low. If you ever shoot through my city, now you know. Cause we are strictly business and we also got our pride, and if you don't like it, I suggest you break wide."

The single was from his first album, "MC Breed & DFC," which sold between 2.5 million to 4 million copies.

Breed was a "musical legend of Flint," said Carter McWright, owner of local record store Music Planet.

"One thing about Breed is he had that flow, that rhythm," McWright said. "He knew how to flow with it."

Funeral arrangements were being completed Monday in Flint.

Breed is survived by three daughters and two sons; his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
