For an artist that makes his money off swooning women - BLACK women, to boot - that would be career suicide. Why do you think Luther never came out? Think about all the known gay male R&B artists of the past 25 years - Sylvester & Jermaine Stewart are the only ones that come to mind, and I don't think Stewart ever came out, it was just "known" around the industry.

To be honest, when I first heard that he was gay, it shocked me a bit because I just figured Johnny just wasn't into no one so imagine my surprise when I read an interview he did basically saying why he got threats because he came out of the closet in 1982, lol.

Honestly, who knows but isn't his latest song about being in love with an "Independent Woman"....can't see him coming out now if he is gay. Also, I think she said her show wouldn't be political....that is mighty political!

This may come as no surprise, but so is Tracy Chapman. She had an affair with author, Alice Walker, some years ago.

People talk a lot about him being gay, whether he is or not (don't care) but I know for a fact that he's not going to do anything like that (especially if he wants to have a singing career)..... remember Tevin Campbell smile

I totally agree. He would not shoot his career in the foot, at this point of his career. If he was smart, he would not say a word and just keep people wondering.

I'm not familiar enough with Ne-Yo to even guess either way whether he's gay or not. But I think, though there is a possibility his career could take a hit if he was gay and came out, that in the long run it would only be beneficial to the r&b world and to other performers. Much of "black" music is still a very homophobic atmosphere and perhaps the best way to combat that would be for someone prominent to come out.

Same deal with rap and hip hop. Is that world ready for a prominent gay rapper? One would have to come out before we could know.

In a perfect world.. but the world of r&b/hiphop will not be an accepting fraction in no NEAR FUTURE. It's just the way it is. Right or Wrong. Its a culture of heterosexual stereotypes.

Luther Vandross, RIP.. lived in that world for many many yrs and I dont blame him for not officially coming out. Sometimes what you do in the sheets is not a social issue. Not everyone can be a trailblazer in that regard.

I remember PATTI LABELLE, when asked said r&b/hip hop artists should stay in the closest. I was pretty surprised..as she has a legion of gay followers and has won the GLAAD award for acceptance and love for the LGBT community. But after thinking about it.. I see where she was coming from. She has kept luthers secret and many others for so many yrs. And having conversated with Ms Labelle in my lifetime.. I SO SEE, where she is coming from!

The only way to change that is for someone to come out. It'll be rough on them, and whoever it is that does it will lose a lot of fans and public support. But someone needs to step up and do it. It can't continue being a poisonous, homophobic environment forever.

Or, barring that option, perhaps someone who is well respected within the industry should speak out against homophobia first. That could potentially pave the way for someone who is LGBT to come out.

So Tracy Chapman and Johnny Mathis are the only out African American singers (notice I didn't say black...I think it is something specifically about America)?

Yeah, and he died 20 years ago. I think it also spoke to the type of music he was doing, maybe, although he probably won over straight R&B fans. Who knows. I could care less about his sexuality. He had some good songs. That should be all that matters. Frankly, he was the first big out star, black or white.

It doesn't matter what meaning anyone "dubs" it with, the point is it's associating "gay" with "bad".
