"Say two hail Marys, drop $20 in the bin as you leave and you are forgiven." They so to have the power to forgive sins. I'm not intimidated by that.. I would tell the priest the same thing in a polite manner, that God only forgives sins..... priests have no control over a man's 'spirit or will' ..they certainly have no control over someone's soul after death

Well no one well ever forgive the vatican for the rape/molestation and the cover up of all these crimes against young boys. Lets not forget that two popes covered this up, and should be in jail for it. They could careless what you think for the Vatican is all about politics, power, and money. They're just fulfilling the prophecy of our Lord. Sad, but true.

Why do they need to forgive Lennon?
His comments weren't directed at the Vatican. Let me guess, it's on behalf of Heaven, as if Jesus can't handle it . . . . I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

toejam said: See, this is my problem with organised religion...
What makes a "Catholic" these days is completely different to what made a Catholic say 50 years ago. All religions are like that - they're constantly evolving and changing. So who's to say what they will believe and consider "the truth" in another 50 years? But isn't that the point of religion? - to see about "universal law"? How can it be universal if even its supporters change their minds every couple of years? So what it boils down to is that all you're supporting is the word "Catholoicism", which as pointed out above actually has no definitive stance on anything. (the same is for all organised religion IMO, I'm just using Catholicism as the example). It's no different from supporting a sports team. The players/coaches/managers etc. change on a regular basis. Ater a couple of years you have a completely new team that bares no resemblence to the team you originally supported. But we keep supporting them because they're our "home team" or because we like the colour of their jersey . Who cares if the team you fell in love with is now a bunch of whining, steroid-uising jerk-offs? . That's OK for sports as it's all in good fun, but when it comes to finding the meaning of life, wouldn't you like to dedicate yourself to something a little more... consistent? [Edited 12/3/08 16:00pm] In praise of toejam . . . . As a life long Raider fan . . . it's not that it's the home team or their colors. It's the attachment to a team, the character of the team, its history, and most importantly the memories associated with a particular team or sport. I will digress and say that Raider fans are just waiting for Al Davis to die. So we believe we'll be okay once we're done with the Al Davis era. Raider fans will fill the stadium for that funeral! With religion, I think the biggest retention factor is fear. You've been in church before you could walk, or talk, and then you were probably there until you went to college or otherwise left home. Then after a few years you go back and it's a nice experience but . . When it's been pounded into that this is eternity you are playing with, not just 125 years max here. And most of us will not see 100 let alone 125 or longer. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

john lennon wasn't killed over this remark...he was killed over his opposition to Nixon and the simmilar threath he posed to carter and reagan. infowars had a great article on the subject just two days ago: http://www.infowars.com/?p=6309
on topic: I have a problem with the term 'forgives' since it still takes the stand he (lennon) did something wrong. I don't think Jesus would have minded a stupid tongue-in-cheek joke [disclaimer: not trying to speak for Jesus] It was not in vain...it was in Minneapolis!
