Drummer Mitch Mitchell Found Dead
November 12, 2008 Performed with: Jimi Hendrix Experience Noel Redding Jack Bruce Larry Coryell Georgie Fame Pete Nelson Martha Velez .....and many more Acclaimed Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell was reportedly found dead in a Portland, Oregon hotel this morning. Early reports indicate he died due to natural causes. Mitchell and bassist Noel Redding comprised Jimi Hendrix’s rhythm section from 1966 until 1969, with Mitchell joining the guitar great on all three Experience albums — Are You Experienced?,Axis: Bold As Love and Electric Ladyland — as well as legendary performances at the Isle of Wight and Woodstock. 1973 interview Mitchell also played in the Dirty Mac with John Lennon, Eric Clapton and Keith Richards for The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus. Post-Experience, Mitchell remained mostly under the radar, performing at the occasional studio session or concert before ultimately joining first the Gypsy Sun Experience and, most recently, the Experience Hendrix tour (he performed on the tour in Portland this past Friday). With the death of Hendrix in 1970 and Redding in 2003, Mitchell was the last surviving original Jimi Hendrix Experience member. Sadly, Mitchell is the second drummer associated with Hendrix to die this year: Hendrix’s Band of Gypsys bandmate Buddy Miles also passed away in February (Source: Rollingstone.com) [Edited 11/12/08 19:11pm]

I just saw "Experience Hendrix" in NYC about a month ago. He looked really weak. Even when he came to the mike to thank the audience for coming, you could barely hear him. At one point in the show, my friend said, "Is he even playing?"
The pic I took of him didn't come out good: http://viewmorepics.myspa...D=31758832 "Love Hurts. Your lies, they cut me. Now your words don't mean a thing. I don't give a damn if you ever loved me..." -Cher, "Woman's World"

Because of his Jazz sensibilities, he was a perfect drumming foil for the innovative music that Jimi Hendrix created.
His Jazz chops provided an open-ended feel for the tunes and kept the group from being boxed into the straight Rock grooves of the time. Supposedly Jimi called him "My Elvin Jones". Ever hear Ginger Baker or Keith Moon play 6/8 like this?... ...Manic Depression Or swing like... ...Third Stone from the Sun Or the delicate cymbal work and dynamics displayed on... ...1983... (A Merman I Should Turn to Be) / Moon, Turn the Tides...Gently Gently Away Luckily I got to see The Experience perform a few times. You could try thinking of Robert Mugabe on the bus tomorrow - see if it works twice..... "Not everything that is faced can be changed; but nothing can be changed until it is faced." - James Baldwin

They just did a Jimi Hendrix tribute tour here last month but he didn't show up. I dug out my late Mother's Hendrix lp and gave it a listen. Truely talented musicians indeed.

Mitch Mitchell was a huge part of Jimi's sound. He was an awesome drummer and I'm sure him & Jimi are already making incredible music on the other side.
I know Noel Redding is also on the other side but the master Billy Cox is still with us.
