Close Harmony and Acapella: Take 6, Manhattan Transfer, etc...

...

I guess 'cause it's getting close to the Holidays, but I always start listening to a lot of Acapella and Close Harmony stuff at this time of year-from Jazz to Doo-wop, and Gospel to Pop, Classical, Rock and beyond...
I can't find all of them on youtube, but I did find a handful of my favorites...

Stevie Wonder with Take 6 - " Juntos eles cantam" / "O Thou That tellest good Tidings To Zion"

Take 6 with Michael Mcdonald - Tracks Of My Tears

The Real Group (from Sweden) - "Words"

The Nylons - Up The Ladder To The Roof

The Blenders - When It Snows

The Blenders -One Small Child/ We Three Kings

Committed - Something About Sunday Morning

Manhattan Transfer - A Nightingale Sang In Berkley Square

Singers Unlimited - Killing Me Softly

The Hi Lo's (from The Nat King Cole Show)

The Mills Brothers - Up The Lazy River

Singers Unlimited - More I Cannot Wish You

Manhattan Transfer was my first group like this and then I got into Take Six. The others I’m not so familiar with but I have to throw in New York Voices among my favorites but I don’t think they’ve done holiday music.
Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

biggrin I like The New York Voices, too! For me, it's not necessarily limited to Christmas music, I just listen to a lot of acapella/harmony group stuff around this time, for some reason.....

another example, and got nothing to do wit' christmas, lol :

Rockapella - Zombie Jamboree

and then there was the legendary German vocal sextett Comedian Harmonists...

they started in 1927, but after the Nazis came into power it became difficult for them to continue with their "Non-Arian" music and since 3 of their members were Jewish... however, a couple of their songs are considerd genuine classics in Germany

My kinda thread! Singers Unlimited are superb harmonists! And kudos for bringing up Chanticleer. Don't know that I've ever seen them mentioned here. They're kinda dorky, but those voices? cloud9

Oh, man, You have to see Chanticleer doing some Black Spirituals-I know that sounds unlikely, But check that out if you can, it's at the end of their Christmas with Chanticleer DVD (I wish there were some examples on youtube--dammit! mad )...man, they get into to it, too, them heads start shakin'... lol it just has to be seen....they also do a great version of Vince Guaraldi's "Christmas Time Is Here"....

BTW, Take 6 are big Singers Unlimited Fans --they were especially influenced by Gene Puerling, who was a founding member of both the Hi Lo's and The Singers Unlimited, and did the vocal arrangements for both. Take 6 tenor Mark Kibble said he was introduced to their music from an uncle in Washington DC, lol funny, 'cause that's my hometown and a local jazz DJ named Felix Grant used to spin their stuff....they were a staple in the family collection growing up.....Also BTW, the late Len Dresslar, who was the bass singer in Singers Unlimited, was also the voice of the Jolly Green Giant on TV ( "Ho, Ho, Ho" )....
