I think what BK means is...the R&B/funk fans...

Well, that makes sense then. Seeing as most genre fans tend to think they are the 'general public'.

I always thought Prince's main audience post-Purple Rain was very different than before. After he crossed over, it wasn't the funk fans buying his albums anymore, but pop and rock fans. He still sold records, it was just to different people.

That's the way I perceived it as well. He definitely seemed to be directing his efforts towards a new audience.

You hit the nail right on the head. Plenty of funk fans remained Prince fans but not nearly as many as before.

I've been wondering for a couple of days "Could Prince have pulled off Alex O'Neal's 'Innocent'?"
"We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."

In a way, Prince was still blind when he made "The Black Album". A lot of Prince's earlier R&B/funk fans were saying he wasn't funky anymore because they wanted that Minneapolis Sound back that Prince was famous for. They weren't happy with the old fashioned type instruments that Prince was blending with his new music. Then Prince's answer is to record a funk album full of horns. That's not what people wanted from Prince at the time. Prince still didn't get it. If he had released the album, people still would have pissed on it. It might have been well received if it had been 1973 but it was 1988 and people weren't wanting that old fashioned sound.

I liked the idea of 'The Black Album' much more than the actual record.I remember first hearing about it in the fall of 1987.There were all these rumors that it would be a "return to the funk".....a gritty, nasty,'Dirty Mind'-type record where Prince gets "black" again. When I finally heard a bootleg copy,it wasn't quite what I expected. It's funky, for sure, but I guess my expectations were too high.I actually think it's a mediocre album.

And oh my god..

NO ONE talked about Suzy..all the other songs but say nothing about the most funky fast paced funny song on it. Everytime I see that album Suzy is the first song I think of.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
