REMEMBER the video I DON'T WANNA CHANGE THE WORLD. Can somebody post it? Why did this TALENT go and KILL herself? I know what the note said and about her BIPOLAR and DEPRESSION. What a SAD STORY...PLEASE PEOPLE DON'T TRY SUICIDE! MICHAEL HUTCHENCE was another TRAGEDY...

[Edited 11/30/08 9:01am] I just came from checking out the TV One website...they look like they have some good shows, like a very clean, pre-hooch era BET...I'm just so outdone knowing I have to settle for these measly damn clips ....but you should check it out anyway. The roundtable discussion shows look pretty hot and heated. Some brotha already screamin' about why he can't take sistas no mo' . Anyhoo... http://www.tvoneonline.com/video/

I read that she talked with a friend on the phone the night before, and told him that she was thinking of ending her life. He tried to talk her out of it, but she said "you choose to be here, i don`t". Apparently, the man and some of her other friends showed up at the concert (the day she died) to talk to her about it, but it was too late.

It took me a good minute to remember who that brotha was....but then suddenly I was having flashbacks to Phil Donahue and BET's "Our Voices" with Bev Smith, and THENNN I remembered who that fool was . I was thinkin' who wants to hear his ole misogynistic' woman hatin ass with a roundtable show ... ...all I know is that it's 2009, and I'm fista find me a BARACK. That anti-female shit is so played and early 90's

That anti-female shit is so played and early 90's No doubt! But he's a MESSSSS! Honey, I met that fool last year at a party and I didn't know who he was cuz I don't have TVOne or listen to the radio and ANYTIME I've heard his show he's on some bullshit bashing women or talking about sex. Anyway, he came up to me and was chattin' and about 10 minutes into the conversation he asks me, "Do you swing?" I'm like, "No, but I've been meaning to check out a class at one of the local clubs." I was serious too cuz it didn't dawn on me that somebody would just say that shit to someone they just met. He's like "Ummm, no, I mean are you bi-sexual because those are the only kinda women I date." I was like nucca, puhleaze, you can move around now. Plus, he's obnoxious and conceited as hell which amazes me cuz he ain't cute.

I liked learning a bit about her but I really don't feel like they went in depth very much. It's a bootleg Behind the Music, but with lesser known acts. Still worth watching, but I do wish they'd cover more ground. I thought sure they'd make a small mention of the School Daze song... maybe they just couldn't get the rights

It was sad seeing Garcia & Hyman's sister trying their HARDEST to compose theirselves through out the whole special I noticed that Sakinah didn't participate in the documentary,,,,she was the one who took it the HARDEST during Hyman's suicide shock.
I agree with CalhounSq, they didn't scratch the surface and they didn't bring out anything new that I haven't already been fimiliar with,,,,but then again, NOT alot of people know Phyllis Hyman to begin with and that might as well be a good start. Another BIG + is the fact that they shed the light on the mental depression issue and how black folks treat it with SO much neglect and secrecy. I have couple of family members who are suffering from it and NONE of them seek medical help or therapy sessions(despite the fact that they're well read and educated, go figure). Thats the thing with alot of black folks, they think CHURCH is the only salvation to their "problems" and if that ain't a solution, then god forbids, some other other dangerous "alternatives" I like what Jenifer Lewis said in her Wendy Williams interview, that black folks are only 4 generations away from slavery,,,,while RARELY few of them got cured from the baggage that came from that territory, the rest inherited the baggages and demons from generation to generation without ever addressing them or curing them. Mental depression is like this BIG elephant that is sitting in the middle of the room and everybody acts like it doesn't exist.

Very true & you're right, though they didn't go deep I really didn't know much about Phyllis myself so her journey was interesting . [Edited 12/1/08 9:38am]

While not very indepth I still found it hard to watch and enjoyed it if only for all the photos of Phyllis, so many of which I had never seen before. I can't even imagine how much more beautiful she would have been if she were happy inside. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

She really was a beautiful woman. It really is a shame some people just can't stand up to the hurts of this world
