Just watch the TV one special Unsung about Phyllis Hyman.

This is why i say that people have "slept" in Manilow's chops as a "musician" and writing music and also his love of Jazz. He did 2 records like this, first was the "2 AM paradise Cafe" album in 1984 which he cites to this day as his best album ever, and of course the "swing Street" record. On the first record he had guests like Sarah Vaughan,Mel Torme, Mundell Lowe,Gerry Mulligan to name a few, as Manilow said he was very lucky to be able to do this record with this kind of talent. I never realized how talented Manilow was until I started paying attention to his work with Phyllis Hyman and Dionne Warwick. That man is genius. I hate that he had to resort to doing cover cds. Also, I give him credit for teaching Jennifer Hudson on how to be a star.
