i've heard. I picked it up after work and headed straight to the polls. I listened to Amplified last night on my way to work just to warm myself up for Renaissance. Great to have Q-tip back on the scene. I hadn't bought a Cd since june and hadn't bought a hip hop cd at all this year. "The renaissance" is a whole hell of a lot better than "amplified". I dig the new cd but it is not nearly as polished as amplified imo. Still better than a lot of hip hop that's out right now. Tip is coming to charlotte Nov. 29. Don't laugh at my funk

Glad Q-tip got back to his original style..."Move" is hot...one hip-hop album I will buy and listen to more than once. I forgot how much I love his delivery, always great lyrics.

Q-tip completely...
I SO was not checking for him and my (dumb ass) cousin said he hated his new single so then I really didn't worry about him. Then I heard what I later found to be "Gettin' Up" while I was shopping at Guess? and immediately thought "Wait...I know this voice...OMFG..." That song had ALL the employees bobbin their heads. With good reason. SO fly Needless to say, I purchased the album outright (after previewing the first 1/2 of the album and loving it). I'm not a hip-hop fan but this is quality music. Period. I'm a sucker for that. My favorite song is definitely "Dance On Glass". The song goes by quickly but Q-Tip's flow as the beat are both absolutely . The composition of the song really stands out on the album, as well. I can't stop listening to it! "You" is the epic song on this album; the classic Tribe vibe and untouchable flow makes me want to slap somebody. I also enjoyed the 2nd half of "Move" (the stuttering sample in the 1st half was starting to get on my nerves after a while) and "Life Is Better" (though it goes on a tad bit too long, kudos to Norah!). I can't name one song I flat out don't like though. "The Renaissance" is one of the best albums I've bought all year. 2008 has been a year of disappointments overall. Not this one.

missfee said: So I picked up the album today and listened to it an hour ago.....it's the best hip hop cd i've listened to this year alone!!!! I swear I didn't even skip a track....Q has definitely won me over!!!! If you don't have it, this is a must buy RIGHT NOW!!!!!
There's this one track where he starts off rapping acapella with no music, then at about 1:30 or something like that, the music comes in, that shit is hottttt, you hear me???!!!!! I don't know the name because I was doing other stuff around the house, but that is one track that stood out with me. [Edited 11/4/08 18:30pm] That's "DANCE ON GLASS"...you better PREACH!!!! Lord knows, that song is flames! I have a second for "DOG" as the best song on "The Renaissance". Can I get a third? Another thing, as well: I just love how Raphael Saadiq seems incapable of making any decent music when he's not collaborating with someone. "The Way I See It" was the most ridiculously one-dimensional and disingenuous piece of music I've heard in a really, long time. "We Fight/We Love", while not my favorite song on the album, is just another example of a good song that isn't Saadiq's alone. Looking back on his entire solo career makes me sick; so much potential...wasted...maybe his egotistic butt NEEDS to be in a group. [Edited 11/5/08 23:58pm]

[Edited 11/5/08 23:58pm] Well, you love soul, and you're not short on thought. Welcome to the Org! That being said, your point on Saadiq is valid, but I think you're a bit too hard on T-W-I-S-I. It's a straight ahead album, and consistent, in theme and tone if not quality. Not everyone can pull off a multi-dimensional album. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

I've been around for a while but I probably don't post as much as I should. I feel like consistency can be achieved without robbing your album of absolutely any variety, you know? Actually, Q-Tip's album is a good example of what I mean. I believe that sometimes a consistent album is better than an inconsistent one. At least you can pick out songs that standout among the rest. This album I have trouble with picking apart because it's SO straight-forward. Clearly Saadiq had a direction he was interested in trying but, honestly, I don't need to hear him replicate. He needs to originate (or, at least, create a cohesive sound for himself; he has yet to do even that). Like many have said, if I wanted to hear an album which sounds like 50s music then I'd...you know...the nearly identical songs just ran into each other mindlessly and, for me, it made for one of the most unsatisfying listens I've had it a long while. It's definitely cohesive. For sure. That said I don't consider "TWISI" good, nor do I consider the songs it's made up of good. They just are and, worse, they were done better the first time around.

It's not like I can say you're completely off base. Yet, I can't help but like it for what it is. I reacted the same way to Ricky Fante's album a coupla years back (but I revisited it a couple of months ago and actually liked it a little better).
