Well people differ on their opinion of "as I am" to me, its LIGHT years better than her first album, by far, no contest. What im hearing on this album i never even heard a whisper of on the first album, i wasnt at all impressed by anything with the first record. The feeling for her grew with the second record which was a much welcome surprise, and i feel she took it too another level with As I Am, a track like "sure Looks good to me" is something that beyonce and mariah should be doing but since they are not in the same ball park as Alicia they fall short of "meaningful lasting songs".

I agree with you that "As I Am" is much, much better than "Songs In A Minor" which, IMO, is tied with "FutureSex/LoveSounds" and "Confessions" for the most overrated and over-celebrated album of this decade. I popped that album in once and never listened again; it was that, as you put it, "unimpressive."

I actually gave "The Diary of Alicia Keys" another listen not too long ago and I've got to say it's not half bad. It's still not an album that displays 100% of her potential but it's far more consistent than the first album and more of a satisfying listen, to me, than the third. "As I Am" has some songs that I absolutely cannot tolerate. At all. I can't really say that about any of the songs on the second album.

I respect Alicia for choosing to go toward a less-Urban, more "classy" (so-to-speak) direction but I also feel like the result is that the music has been somewhat whitewashed. When I found myself listening to the album, as a whole, less and less, I changed my original opinion about "As I Am" being her best album. I think she tried too hard...and I'm not just talking about her vocals. She tried to separate herself with this last album but, really, a lot of the results just came out as dry and/or boring. It's pretty sad that the jazz sample at the beginning of "Where Do We Go From Here" is 10x better than the song itself...

[I actually just spun "SLGTM" for the first time since I bought the album and, 5 seconds later, I don't remember the first thing about it. I give Beyonce and Mariah credit for rarely encountering that issue.]

Yes, that is exactly what I felt listening to As I Am.

that will be interesting, especially since i felt she wouldn't be nominated at all. it would suck if she got a bunch of nominations and no wins. she already won a grammy for No One. im thinking maybe one grammy for Never See Me Again, and that's it. the album didn't do much for me.

Actually my "love" of her work has grown since the second album, i wasnt a fan by any means of the first record, i have it, but i never listen to it at all, just cant, but the last two more and more

I can't stand her first album

so of the 2 songs. Doncha know is real good, I like the melody and her vocal.

The savior track is not for me, and again I find her vocally not pleasing.

But hey the Doncha track is damn good.
Music is the best...

Re-release? disbelief

Is this just for the UK? But i do agree i dont like Re-issues, but the industry is so starved at this point, i mean starved, you may actually see a major fold early next year, or at least be bought out. Plus NYC will lose both "Virgins" as they are set to close, one in February and the other later in 2009. Circuit City will be eliminating almost all music stocked, Best Buy is going to do another 40% stock cut in stores, and today it was announced that even APPLE, thats right APPLE, is in alot of cash trouble going into this quarter.

that's sad.. and yeah merges with labels may even happen
