Just a side note, the Grammy nods will come out in about 5 weeks or so, and insiders are saying that you will see her possibly setting a nominations record this year. [Edited 10/30/08 15:48pm] Is this just for the UK? But i do agree i dont like Re-issues, but the industry is so starved at this point, i mean starved, you may actually see a major fold early next year, or at least be bought out. Plus NYC will lose both "Virgins" as they are set to close, one in February and the other later in 2009. Circuit City will be eliminating almost all music stocked, Best Buy is going to do another 40% stock cut in stores, and today it was announced that even APPLE, thats right APPLE, is in alot of cash trouble going into this quarter. Honestly i think she is a shoe-in for song and record, and album, they are already talking that she, the Eagles,Metallica and Coldplay are favorites in the album category for nominations "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

I'd love her to win Grammys. The clips sound nice but I'd have to listen to them in their wholeness

I have no problem with her cleaning up for that album at all, i do have a problem if Beyonce is nominated for Song of the Year for "If i were a boy" which is being considered "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Actually my "love" of her work has grown since the second album, i wasnt a fan by any means of the first record, i have it, but i never listen to it at all, just cant, but the last two more and more "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F

Circuit City hardly stocks music as it is. Why don't they just get rid of it altogether. So it's basically set up for people to buy music online. For the most part, it will have to be digital because alot of online outlets arent stocking the cds like they used to, Amazon was even listed as "being in trouble" thats when you know the economy is really bad, when something like Amazon that sells everything, is in trouble. Circuit city will probably do that soon, they have a new CEO and they are re-structuring, which i can tell you from experience, is a way of saying "going out of business soon". The Best Buy in Midtown, was actually re-arranging their store, and i heard from a universal rep, it was because they simply dont wanna stock catalog anymore. "Doncha Know (The Sky Is Blue)" was played at the end of The Secret Life of Bees...and I fell in love with it immediately. In the context of the film, it almost made me get emotional again . I don't know whether it was made for the film or for the re-release but I'm very happy it's included. Bluesy gold; her voice isn't flawless, but I actually like that.
"Savior" is flat-out wonderful (though the melody and tempo in the choruses is WAY too similar to that of "Baby Love"), and more authentic than anything that Raphael Saadiq or Robin Thicke did on their albums. The same goes for "Doncha Know". These two songs are better than 95% of the original album. Now that doesn't make one bit of sense...was she in the middle of a creative block or something while doing "As I Am"? These two songs show more of her musical potential than the entire album as a whole. I don't know whether to BOO or be mad at her for coming out weaker than her capabilities allowed in the first place. In fact, I wish she'd reorganize the album completely, knock off a couple lackluster and unfitting songs (everything after "I Need You" would do) and seamlessly add them to the tracklisting as if they were there to begin with.

I think her creative juices started to flow at the end of As I Am. No One was the very last song she recorded for the album and I believe I remember her saying she was kind of just getting into the zone. She scraped a lot of the songs in the beginning because the music just wasn't coming out right, but towards the end she got into it. Unfortunately the deadline took over and we got As I Am.
If I'm not mistaken though, Saviour was done by her and John Mayer. I need to check that out. Studiotraffic-One of the fastest ways to get payed on the net!

Well people differ on their opinion of "as I am" to me, its LIGHT years better than her first album, by far, no contest. What im hearing on this album i never even heard a whisper of on the first album, i wasnt at all impressed by anything with the first record. The feeling for her grew with the second record which was a much welcome surprise, and i feel she took it too another level with As I Am, a track like "sure Looks good to me" is something that beyonce and mariah should be doing but since they are not in the same ball park as Alicia they fall short of "meaningful lasting songs". I know I give her a hard time. I do think she has some talent.
But LD, you mention that you think she may set the record for nominations this year. With all the amazing albums ever released, do you really think she deserves this type of praise? Didn't the album win last year? So how is it still avail to be voted on. I am just saying artists like Stevie Wonder in the 70's with 3 albums of the year in 4 tries deserves the most nomimations, not Alicia. She is not even in the the same ballpark as Stevie in his prime. Again no one is here is claiming she is better than Stevie, but that's my logic when someone is expected to garner the most of anything. Music is the best...

I agree with you that "As I Am" is much, much better than "Songs In A Minor" which, IMO, is tied with "FutureSex/LoveSounds" and "Confessions" for the most overrated and over-celebrated album of this decade. I popped that album in once and never listened again; it was that, as you put it, "unimpressive." I actually gave "The Diary of Alicia Keys" another listen not too long ago and I've got to say it's not half bad. It's still not an album that displays 100% of her potential but it's far more consistent than the first album and more of a satisfying listen, to me, than the third. "As I Am" has some songs that I absolutely cannot tolerate. At all. I can't really say that about any of the songs on the second album. I respect Alicia for choosing to go toward a less-Urban, more "classy" (so-to-speak) direction but I also feel like the result is that the music has been somewhat whitewashed. When I found myself listening to the album, as a whole, less and less, I changed my original opinion about "As I Am" being her best album. I think she tried too hard...and I'm not just talking about her vocals. She tried to separate herself with this last album but, really, a lot of the results just came out as dry and/or boring. It's pretty sad that the jazz sample at the beginning of "Where Do We Go From Here" is 10x better than the song itself... [I actually just spun "SLGTM" for the first time since I bought the album and, 5 seconds later, I don't remember the first thing about it. I give Beyonce and Mariah credit for rarely encountering that issue.]

The album wasnt nominated because it came out 6 weeks after the nominations were sent in, she performed on the show, but "no one" was the only thing that was eligible. As far as females, who is possibly going to get nominated? Mariah? Janet? Madonna? i mean those 3 can pretty much make plans to be elsewhere that night. The comparison of stevie and alicia is impossible because stevie existed in a climate of competition, Alicia does not, nor do most artists of today, but Alicia for her genre, is the most deserving. Its like Barry Bonds and Hank Aaron, i mean Barry may have broke the record, but we all know Hank is still the better all around, so that is what Stevie and Alicia are.
