How about this for history: today is the 40th anniversary the song was officially released by Motown TWO YEARS after Marvin recorded it. Berry Gordy thought the song sucked. Ended up being the biggest-selling Motown single of the entire 1960s at four million copies! lol

cool

That was such a great performance too. Marvin Gaye was what you call a rare talent. I saw another video that showed that he did a medley of his mid-'60s hits ("How Sweet It Is", "Ain't No Mountain High Enough", "Chained") before getting into "Grapevine". smile

Love this performance. Ironically about the album version, I have heard different songs with rhodes piano, but I love the way it sounds on the track, it adds to the atmosphere

I heard a version where they went to the end and Marvin hollered one more high note before the end. biggrin

The definitive version/arrangement of this song. The Gladys and the Pips arrangement almost tries to be upbeat...that whole tone always left me confused.

I don't know why they gave Gladys that song. The theme just didn't fit the music. Good music though and they smoked on that joint but it was undoubtedly Marvin's. He recorded it before they did anyways. His just got released last. confused

I didn't know that. Crazy. Galdy and the Pips were Motown?

Yeah for like six years. When they left in 1973, they released "Midnight Train".
