When Artists Change Arrangements of Songs for Concerts

What do you think? Is it a good idea? Do you like it?

I personally like it, it makes its concert experience almost like discovering a new song, but still familiar enough to bring back the memories associated with the song.

You're exactly right.

It shows the mark of someone that understands that there's a difference in arranging a song for a recording vs live performance.

The other benefit is that for the audience, as you've indicated, they receive something new.
Personally, I don't want to waste my time and money going to see someone recreate their album note for note.
I can hear that anytime.

Believe it or not, there are those concert goers that get pissed when artists rearrange tunes.
I guess it messes up their sing/scream along they've practiced all week. smile

It depends on whether the new arrangement is good or not. I enjoy new arrangements when they are well done such as some of the new versions of her old hits that Madonna does.
However, I have heard some artists who do new arrangements and they are horrible. I would rather hear the original in those cases.
I don't mind if an artist does their hits just like the original if the singing and musicianship is good.
I don't think you should change an old song just for the sake of changing it or because you are bored with the original. Only change it if you can come up with something as good or better than the original version.

Anxiety

when a band recreates the studio album note for note in concert, i feel like i'm at a recital. especially if there's nothing to look at on stage, i often wonder why i'm putting myself through the hassle of dealing with a general admission crowd of rude drunken douchery, when i could hear the exact same thing sitting in the comfort of my home, and my eyes could at least be trained on a good book instead of watching a bunch of musicians who can't be bothered to connect with the audience. yawn.

it all depends on whether the artist has a real band playing behind them or not. if not then what arrangement can we speak of other than a "remix" version?

arrangements can either flesh out more of the studio version or hinder it by trying other elements that doesn't connect with the audience.

in the end, i do like different arrangements live
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I like it also, i have always felt the concert experience is something you are often paying much more for than a cd or album, so you should be getting something that i cant just sit home and listen too. I for one HATE when artists just roll out the hits tour after tour, i want to hear album cuts and things i would never think of.

Artist Sade is notorious for this and she sounds better live from what I've observe. I believe if any artist has a good band and arrangements, as well as a good voice, the effects are amazing. When she is not recording, her band Sweetback produces for other artists.

I actually expect this and can't remember hearing an arrangement I didn't like. Performances that sound like the album or have an extended instrumentation for a couple of extra dance moves is boring after awhile.

A creative performer with a good live band mixing up the songs is a nice surprise and refreshing to a song you've heard a million times before.

I love to hear songs changed up in concert. However, when it comes to Prince, I don't like hearing horns on old Prince songs that never had horns on them to begin with.

I'm sayin! There are definitely times where I'm like "Why they went and did that?"

Yo, Prince has been fucking up "Kiss" for years. I don't know if it is impossible to perform something that sparse/gated but he made it sound loud and very busy like "Sleep Around".

Also, Renato was not that jammin' on the keyboards. Not feelin' him.

The last thing I saw from Sheila E was her on the drum kits singin with just her and the drums, some slower version of "Glamorous Life". Nice display of drumming talent but hated hearing the song like that.

I remember hearing bootleg footage, probably around the time of the "Lovesexy" era. He added horns to "Head" and "DMSR" and it sounded horrible. It's like, not only had he changed his style in 1985 but was performing "Old Prince" songs to match his new style. It felt like he was trying to totally kill off the "Old Prince".

Renato Neto is one bad boy on keyboards.

I will admit that his style is more appropriate to the newer material.

You're both right! nod

I don't mind hearing horns on songs Prince has done with The Lovesexy band OR The original NPG. But songs he has done with The Revolution and years before that, put those damn synths back on stage I say!!!

Remember in the movie Sign 'O' The Times when Prince was playing a slow piano ballad version of Little Red Corvette?!?

THAT was the murder of the "Old Prince".
