since you've been gone, all that's left is a band of gold One of my favorite songs from the early 70s.The subject matter was slighty controversial back then (a newly married man who couldn't...uh..."perform" on his wedding night)

Nice thread...Freda is one of my all time fave female vocalists. Very underrated I feel. Great song. Great arrangement and production from H,D & H as well. Like all of the production they did for her. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."
nammie "What BGZ says I believe. I have the biggest crush on him." http://ccoshea19.googlepa...ssanctuary http://ccoshea19.googlepages.com

Even though the lyrics are clearly pronounced, I think people just like the groove and Freda's voice so they aren't listening to the song.

I love this song!
I swear though that I've heard a version of this song with a different vocalist and slightly different lyrics. Anyone know anything about it? "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Yeah,I have this song on a 70s soul compilation and in the liner notes, the writer examines the lyrics, which are subtle.I had never looked at it that way... that night on our honeymoon we stayed in separate rooms... hoping soon that you'll walk right through that door and love me like you tried before

The subject of the song is interesting to say the least.

I always took it as she couldn't perform since she was a virgin. She says "you took me from the shelter of a mother I had never known, never loved any other...we kissed after taking vows..." She's saying she was inexperienced and hadn't done anything physically with him until after they got married. Even when not paying attention to what exactly it is she's talking about in the song, you can definitely feel the angst in her voice when she sings it. I guess that's another way the song could be interpreted

I'm glad I'm not the only person who didn't understand the lyrics. But the music and performance are beautiful!! [Edited 10/31/08 12:50pm]
