I'm not a musician, so I'm not qualified to pass judgement on whether anyone deserves to be called a musical genius, but I think Bob Dylan is a creative genius, if that's not too nebulous a term. I believe he's created a body of work that's as thrilling, confounding and weird as almost anything else that's come along in the past 1/2 century in any field, and I find him endlessly fascinating, even when he's being blatantly awful.

I think genius is just another human attribute.
Discussing musical genius only in a generic sense, some scarcely have a trace, most sit proudly amongst the masses, several are blessed with a healthy supply that rules their respective regions, while a tiny few epitomize astonishment on a world stage. Then there’s people like Duke Ellington, Bob Dylan, Prince, Joni Mitchell, Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Wonder, David Bowie, James Brown, Bob Marley, Frank Zappa, Miles Davis, Curtis Mayfield, Marvin Gaye, Bruce Springsteen, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Sly Stone and others that defy any type of rational account. The off-the-chart musical geniuses. The legends’ legends. Then you can break it down into subcategories (like Timmy84 has) such that many more would shine their genius on various instruments, in songwriting, in singing and in rap, in lyrics, genres, groups (The Beatles/P-Funk/EWF are phenomenal), production, performance, influence and being influenced, social impact, creativity/imagination/invention, style, image, listening, entertainment, ear, arrangements, improvisation, marketing and more. And genius of any particular persuasion means little without endless, hard work and passion. === abracadabra === [Edited 10/25/08 19:24pm]
