I forget how long ago it was, maybe the mid 70's.

Tom Waits was playing the Ivanhoe Theater on the north side of Chicago.

Between sets he stepped outside for a smoke in the alley.

The police passed by and saw this rather derelict looking guy in a good neighborhood skulking around behind a distinguised place of business. He smelled of alcohol and was uncooperative.

They arrested him for vagrancy and took him down to the station house. Tom slyly never told them he was a performer topping the bill at said fine establishment.

When they let him make a phone call it was to the theater who rushed someone down to bail him out. He was only 45 minutes late for his second set.

A lot of free drinks were handed out that night to the grumbling crowd and Tom, with a wry grin on his face said something like, "I don't know why this kind of shit always happens to me" and launched into his set.

Not telling the cops who he was, was good for his mythology. I guess they didn't look up at the marquee as they drove past the front of theater on their way to the station.

You should have picked Donna Summer. She has great one great myth (that she is a man) and one crazy rumor (anti-gay) that have surrounded her career.

I can't think of any for Dylan or Waits. There might be a wealth of material on Dylan's conversation to Christianity and "back" (back to what, I'm not sure). Wikipedia is probably goof for that, but might not be reliable (even for "rumors").
