Since when is Maroon 5 a blue eyed soul act?

Wikipedia has included them in their list of blue eyed soul acts. WTF?

I wouldn't consider them blue eyed soul. But one of the great drawbacks of a site like Wiki is that any old dumbass can add his two bits, whether it's true or not.

What would you consider them? Cause they are not really Pop and not really Rock?

I wouldn't. There music has elements of all types of music. Rock, Pop, R&B with some hip-hop influences. If you have their first CD, you can hear it. There isn't an artist out there that have a straight "rock" sound.

The keyboardist has a great taste in synths. shrug

I can't bear a grudge against any band that uses an ARP 2500 / 2600.

I have heard them on the local R&B station here in NY. They play Make's me Wonder".

Yeah they dont sing soul. Its more pop than anything..with some small soul elements like the linn drums in "Until youre Over Me" and definitley the guitar in Makes me Wonder but nothing that is close to Jon B or Robin or Teena Marie
Straight Jacket Funk Affair
Album plays and love for vinyl records.

I'd argue Maroon 5 isn't a soul act by any definition, but your argument is weak IMO. A lot of R&B stations don't play Prince or Stevie or Al Green, either.

Haven't they always been?

Since their first interviews they've had that moniker.

They are blue-eyed pop funk. The problem is that they are 80s pop funk. biggrin
Seriously, has anyone listened to their latest CD? They remind me of so many 80s crossover bands its not even funny. To be honest, I'll take their material over some of these newer so-called blue-eyed soul artists like Robin Thicke, Duffy, Amy Whinewhore, Justin Timberfake and Joss "fux4trax" Stone. I have much more respect for the material and unlike the aforementioned, they are a BAND. Musicians who actually sit in a room and rehearse together and write music together and play together. Anyone remember bands?
They are reminiscent of artists like Human League, Yes, Rhythm Syndicate, Wa Wa Nee, Peter Gabriel (in his Sledgehammer days) and artists like that. They are really "crossover" but since music is more categorized than its ever been, there's no real box for them these days. Why not blue-eyed soul? Its as good as any.

I would agree with everything that you said, (WOW! I can't believe I just said that!) Except, the statement about them being 80's pop funk. I don't find their music as cheesy as some 80's music. As much as I liked the Human League, they were cheesy...But, that's just me.
