I might have to pick this one up. I bought their 2004 album and only recently tried to give it a spin again. Just can't get into it. But it sounds like this one is an improvement in many ways. Sounds like a great "light" album and I can't wait to hear the dark one next year (hope it actually happens).

Been listening casually for a few days now. Nice sound so far. Studies have shown the ass crack of the average Prince fan to be abnormally large. This explains the ease and frequency of their panties bunching up in it. |

Found this interesting and very promising:
Why 4:13 isn't a double album
The Guardian has an article about the state of the double album these days, and has this very interesting bit about 4:13 Dream: "I mean, you'd expect the Cure - a band with past double opus form, thanks to 1987's Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me - to be able to release a double album, right? Er, sadly not. Their new album 4:13 Dream is the "light" first half of a double collection, with the second "dark" half to be released separately in 2009. Robert Smith recently told me the rather shocking factors behind the release strategy. Basically, Geffen were only prepared to pay them royalties equivalent to a single album, even if the album was priced as a double. In effect the label were penalising the band for wanting to give their fans more music for less. Smith insisted he didn't care about making any more money but the principle was paramount; he was furious at the idea of a major label conning him out of making the record he wanted. So he held back the second half of the album for six months and one day later, the earliest moment that his contract permitted. The concept would be intact, it would just be up to the fan to Sellotape the two "episodes" together."

Frankly I love Cure Songs that start out with long, lush, dreamy instrumental momments before Robert Smith starts to sing, and this song excels at that. The length of the song is also interesting as it sets a tone for the rest of the album.
Those are usually my favorites. Plainsong, Pictures of You, Disintegration, Faith, The Kiss, Sinking, and so on...all their epics, really.

Moonbeam said: "Underneath the Stars"- Now this is a Cure song! It's got the trademark 2-minute+ instrumental intro with lush atmospherics and grandeur, along with hushed lyrics in the vein of "Sinking" or something. A perfect, grand statement that works well as an opener, but may have even worked better as a final track! 10/10
I love it as the opener, but part of me wonders if it might fit in better with the next batch of songs considering its mood and length. "The Real Snow White"- This has a great song in it somewhere, but its transitions sound a little awkward. 7/10 with potential to grow.
I kinda agree. I want to love it. But the choruses sound so out of place and chirpy compared to the rest of it. Weird. "The Perfect Boy"- Another requisite pop song. This and "The Only One" had me thinking this album would be like Wish. It brings back nice memories, but it isn't as classic as it should be. 7/10
I wholeheartedly disagree. This is one of the best singles they've had in the past 2 decades. I don't get the 'requisite' tag at all. This is a really well constructed, emotive, classicist Cure song and pushes all the right buttons for me. It might not quite live up to some of the live versions I've heard, but this is a total singalong smilefest for me. "This. Here and Now. With You"- Nice elements to the song like the bass are somewhat lost. The song is a bit silly, but I like that! 7/10
Wait. The bass is lost? You think? Even though the mood is nothing like it, it's got that 'off' tone like the bass in the track "Disintegration". Those synthy 'doo doo doo' pseudo vocal sounds flip me out in a way that only The Cure can do. The way the melody line builds from the verses and transitions into the chorus makes my nipples hard. This song is quickly turning into one of my favorites. Can't get enough of it really.

smokeverbs said: 8. "Switch" – 3:44
Holy shit it's the spawn of "cut"! This isn't quite as exciting as a return of "cut" might be, but it'll work. What's with that "sort of 100 years" drum machine in the intro and outro tho? 9. "The Perfect Boy" – 3:21 Track 8 is ok.. but This is where the album picks back up for me. This is great! I'll admit I'm a sucker for Robert's "blah blah blah she said, blah blah blah he said" songs, but this one doesn't disappoint. 10. "This. Here and Now. With You" – 4:06 Yes, yes, yes. What a bass intro! This is so on point, I can't believe it. That sort of natural cure keyboard line hasn't been seen since 1987 has it? Welcome back. I love the lyrics, every element of this song is in place. The chorus floored me. He's been trying to write a song like this since at least 1995, and it finally works. This should have been a single instead of "Freakshow". 11. "Sleep When I'm Dead" – 3:51 Mmmm. More HOTD outakes, please. Love it. 1:32 to 1:35 completely gives this away as an '85 era song, Robert didn't even need to tell us. Can you imagine this as a b-side in '85? I LOVE THIS SONG. 12. "The Scream" – 4:13 Is this an outake from The Top? I didn't think they had this sort of song in them anymore. It's very close to the classic "Hi, We're The Cure and We Love Acid Especially Robert" songs of yore. Love it Love It Love it. Should be 6+ minutes tho. They sound more like a band on this one than they have in years, and even Jason is owning his part. Porl is SO welcome back! But that long note "Screeeeeam"? I got "Prayers for Rain from ENTREAT" shivers off that. Know what I mean? Score: 1million out of 10. 13. "It's Over" – 4:16 BABY FUCKING RAG DOG BOOK! YES! They haven't swung this much since Wish. The only possible song that could follow "The Scream" and not be a letdown. This song completely redeems anything bad I could say about this album! "GET UP GET UP GET UP!!!" And when Robert says Fucking in a song, he Fucking means it. 1million out of 10 also. Another song that needs to be 6+ minutes, cuz I don't want it to end when it does. LOVE IT. I love your descriptions of the 2nd half of the album. And for the most part, I'm in agreement with you. I love "Underneath the Stars", "Sirensong" and "The Hungry Ghost", but there's something so thrilling about that run from 8 until the end. Things get a little twisted with "Switch" onward and I love that. I want the 2nd album RIGHT NOW DAMMIT, so I can construct my own version of things. This is easily the most excited I've been about a new Cure album since Wish and that's saying a lot, since I'm about as much of a Cure fammy fam as you can get. Can't stop playing this and have no plans to anytime soon. Thoroughly satisfying, fun, freaky and fresh. Loves it.

Moonbeam said: smokeverbs said: Great article! It is their greatest album since Wish, they're right. Every album since Wild Mood Swings has been labeled the greatest since Wish. If we're playing that game, I'd rank their post-Disintegration albums in this way: 1. BloodFlowers- far and away my favorite. Classic, timeless, wondrous Cure. 2. Wish- Kind of arena-Cure, but I love so many of the songs. 3. 4:13 Dream- I'm quite enjoying it! It will never crack my top half of Cure albums, but I didn't expect it to. 4. The Cure- I like this one. I don't love it, but there are some gems on there for me. 5. Wild Mood Swings- My least favorite of theirs. It still has some great songs, though. Everybody's gotta have a classic benchmark. Scary Monsters anyone? They're usually there cuz they're true. As of now, I'll say: 1. Wish - I still really love this album. There are a few clunkers, but most of it still holds up as classic for me. It came out at a really crucial time for me too, so there are lots of memories tied to it. 2. 4:13 Dream - This could be a real contender for Wish. That's how much I'm loving it. There's something so vital about having Porl back. This is the most Cure-ish they've sounded since his departure. I never quite pinpointed what was different or missing, but now I know. 3. Bloodflowers - I feel like I should love and rate this album much higher than I do. When it's on, it blows my mind. When I watch Trilogy, it goes even further. I love the overall acoustic tone to it. He was trying to make something classicly Cure and a twin to Disintegration, but by adding all of those acoustic guitars and pro-tools, he came up with a very new and unique sound for the band. 4. The Cure - I loved this when it first came out and was shocked at the horrible response it received. Now, I'm wondering if there was something wrong with me, because this was as panned as New Power Soul. There are still a lot of songs I like from these sessions, but it's hard for me to remember a lot of this album. Maybe I should revisit it. Still, even an off Cure album is great in my book. 5. Wild Mood Swings - Well, other than this. I like "The 13th". "Want" and "Treasure" are killer. The rest of it is either okay or really wrong. Most of the b-sides I really love though and they seem like a fitting forerunner to the sound on Bloodflowers.
