Is 25 the new 35 now or something? lol Beyonce, Justin, Christina, and Britney are all 27, so if they are considered young, than I'm young because I'm 27. dancing jig

The majority of these young 'artists' either work for Disney or don't...the ones who don't, suck the least to me. If you're going to work for Disney, you're going to get a young fanbase (with parents in two...extra $$$ fo' sho') just handed to you. Kids are soo easily fooled by anything associated with the Mouse. lol

I thought Rihanna's appeal was broader until I read this thread. She's been pigeonholed as teenage girl or typical homo music here.

lol

As you know, this forum, as good as it can be at times, is a little shaky/untrustworthy when it comes to most things new.

You know what? Fuck all that. I've seen Rihanna's songs work in rooms of all walks of life.

I see a lot of talk here about younger artists who I barely even know (say Chris Brown), and others who I know but have no interest in (say Rihanna). The thing is a lot of the people talking about them are in their thirties or older. I can't understand anyone over 25 having any interest in these kiddie artists (I'd include Justin and Beyonce in this as well). Why do older orgers continue to monitor a scene that doesn't cater to them? Any insights will be appreciated.

That is an interesting question. My station in general stays on the Adult R&B stations. I will admit to turning the dial to the hip hop station every once in a while just to see what it is I'm missing in terms of what's hot right now. What's even more interesting to me is that there are artists like Justin, Beyonce, Usher and Britney who are all over the age of 25 themselves but are still producing the immature sounding songs. I do feel that if you're still in your 20's, you should get a pass to listen to the "kiddie" music. Once you turn the big 30 like me, you start to feel weird.

Show me a 14-year-old kid whose listening to Bo Diddley or The Rolling Stones or someone who at 60 is hip to Common or Maxwell, and those are the types of people that completely stir my stew.

Anyone can buy the music that's marketed to their demographic.

Then they turn 25, get married, have kids and never listen to music again (outside of the crap their kids are blasting and the occasional country or christian radio).

Right on. I think that's probably a bit more telling, combined with your own passionate music listening.

Can't keep painting everyone (artist OR listener) with the same damn brush.

Hmm, I agree with graycap, it's not even an age thing to me. Stevie Wonder listens to all of the new artists and has their records he's 58, he says he's a music lover so will listen to anything and everything I'm the same way age is not gonna change that for me, I will listen to anything, and even though a lot of new songs aren't classic songs or memorable I'll give them a shot. (tho not always) I realize this topic doesn't count for me since I'm 23 going on 24 but trust me 6 years from now i'll say the same shit.

as long as it's not hannah, jonas or any other disney losers we're making threads about, I don't have a problem talking about the other contemporary artists. After all, they are in the same age group and people will relate to them eg. beyonce, justin, rihanna, etc.

I don't believe that crap about people losing interest in music after 25, 30 or whatever though I agree tastes will change at some point. There was pop music everywhere when I was a kid and my parents were still in their 20's, by the time they reached their 30's, the new top 40 pop music they knew was through what I played or CD's I wanted, or if it was some huge power ballad like my heart will go on or candle in the wind. They stopped buying records and though we got a CD player, they mostly bought compilations from artists they liked in the 60's and 70's as well as world music and religious music.

I definitely do not like hip hop the way I did 10 years ago when I was in high school, once in awhile I'll think a hip hop song is cool, but I'm way over buying any hip hop CD's though I'll download a track if I like it. I mostly like r&b, adult contemporary, dance/pop, some classical, a lot of old school etc.

not sure about that..i'm in that position now and the crap rap my 18 year old nephew plays makes my head hurt- and he said- if you were 18 you would be listening to the same thing...

but I would say that if you like the song -play it- don't let others dictate what music is "shit hop" or not- or too "young" for you-

when J5 came out my mom would tell me stories about how she (an adult at the time) would listen to them on the radio- because they were talented and she liked the music - now i'm sure there were folk back then callin them "shit hop" because they didn't right their own music....
LOVE HARD.

Just because an artist is aimed at kids doesn't mean that I should not talk about them or listen to their music because I am over 25.

I listen to whatever I want to listen to. The target market of the artist doesn't matter to me. If I like the song, I like it...period.

I even dig some of the music put out the current Disney artist. I may not be into the artist, but a song or 2 may catch my attention, such as Get Back by Demi Lovato, Jonas Bros' Burnin Up, Vanessa Hudgens' Baby Come Back, etc.

I am not a fan of Beyonce, but I like Green Light, Baby Boy and Crazy In Love.

I've never been good at choosing age appropriate music. When I was nine I listened to Leonard Cohen pretty much non-stop for about six months (had no idea what he what he was talking about, I just liked the sound), and I fear I will be a lifelong fan of MJ, who is generally considered a kid-oriented artist (?).

I just like what I like, and that's all there is to it. If that makes me immature, I guess there's nothing to be done about that. smile

For me, it's about real music and not about the artists age. For example - Jonny Lang was 16 when he released his debut cd. It's amazing that a boy that age can play guitar and emote such feelings when singing. At the other end of the spectrum is Tony Bennett - 80 years old (or older) and still has great pipes and an amazing ear for music and real singers.

As far as the Justin's, Rihanna's and Beyonce's of the world, you can keep them because they have very little real talent.
