Record labels submit songs for Grammy consideration. The deadline was September 30th for the 2009 Grammys.

The nominations are usually announced in December.

Yeah those are just submissions, i cant believe though that the song made it under the wire of September 30th? the grammys are so selective when it comes to their rules...they disqualified the submission of Springsteen last year for his album saying it was a week late, but they turned around and nominated it for "rock album" because an advance got to "rock stations", wtf? And i can almost guess they will nominate Katy Perry for Best New artist despite her already having an album before which does disqualify you under the rule, but the rule is not always used.

However i can say that you better just give Alicia Keys a seat on the stage because she will be up for everything possible, and most likely will win them all.
