wow...
THAT was simple and pure and just plain wonderful. That girl, whoever she is (Whats her name?), she's a natural. I felt that...got chills. She just walked up and simply, genuinely connected with the lyric and the melody...and her connection became our connection. THATs the magic of a truly gifted singer if you ask me...THATs what i look for more than anything else. beautiful. I wanted it to keep going...so how did the crowd and judges react?

Sounds awful. No phrasing whatsoever. I am sick of retard singers breathing unnecessarily. She didn't connect AT ALL with the song.

She didn't connect AT ALL with the song. uh...yeah...ok fella... your taste and my taste are obviously different...i got no problem with that at all cause i know what i like...i'm perfectly cool agreeing to disagree. ...but, while i point blank completely disagree with your take on whether she 'connected' or not...just so i can attempt to even begin to get a perspective of where you're coming from...give me your definition of 'phrasing'... Phrasing is all about singing a line as if you were communicating and speaking with someone. You wouldn't breathe in the middle of a word when doing this, would you? Her performance is weak and very faux heartfelt. This is not a benchmark at all.
Classic phrasing...Sinatra, Stevie circa early 70s and don't forget the masters at this...Aretha and Donny, God bless them.

This song is about Chaka's father. Here, Chris:
She's got to be one of the MOST underrated lyricists of our time.

yeah, i might...if i was trying to catch my breath, why not? you got a problem with that i guess? seems such a technical thing to get hung up on in this case, and honestly i didn't notice much of that in her rendition. maybe i'm still not getting your definition of phrasing. Or are you saying 'phrasing=oversinging'? I will say that i listened to it a few more times. I do think that, there were a few moments where she oversang some things a bit...but, the 'young-ins' tend to do that ...especially at a talent show audition to try to show what they can do. And yeah, i wish they wouldn't take that approach at all because that's not what its about(IMO)..but unfortunately many of them do...they feel 'over-singing"= "good singing" or "connecting", when in fact, its the other way around more often than not. But all that said, on the whole, I think she took a pretty straight forward approach for the most part and, in my opinion, she DID connect honestly with it in the end...with the right direction, yes i'd wanna hear more from this kid... Mong said: Her performance is weak and very faux heartfelt. This is not a benchmark at all. oh i don't think there was much 'faux' in that at all dude. I think you are wayyy over-exaggerating there. But we'll simply have to agree to disagree on that point. too subjective anyway. well we agree that these folks above kick ass...but seriously who's gonna argue with that list. Though I have to include Ray's name when in any discussion about THE singers in our lifetime. (Also, i'm VERY glad you specified Stevie in the 70's, because Stevie now...???...well thats for another post.)...so yeah, THOSE cats listed above are OBVIOUSLY legendary singers without question, without a doubt, without argument... ...but dude, cmon...this is like...a young nervous kid on some 90second Idol audition ...I'm saying she's actually good and has a natural gift, I'm not saying she's the next 'Donny' or trying to compare her to 'Aretha' or anything like that yet....so, lets try to keep this all in perspective, alright? relax. breath (yeah, it is ok to do that here & there when you're typing too Yup, I DO think the kid did a stand-up job. Kid's got a beautiful voice, and for the most part, nervous as she probably was, she kept it mostly simple and straightforward and, in my opinion, in the end of that 90 seconds, yes, she connected with it... . It's not technical, phrasing is how you communicate with the listener. You're seriously underestimating the importance of it.
Again, this girl is very average. No connection with the lyrics at all.

I agree! Although, this girl made a fair tribute,,,I'll take it as it is, just another tribute. Alot of vocalists put their foot on the technical side of singing in the name of perfection SO much, they 4get about the emotional side. Balance takes you along way,,,,,but I'll take the emotional side over the technical side in a HEARTBEAT.

nah...i really don't think i'm underestimating the importance of communicating with the listener at all...thats actually all i care about really. And i think she did, you don't. was she Chaka? nope. was she Aretha at her best? nope i didn't say that. was she Donny-esque? nope didn't say that either. Was she better than MOST of the over-singing, faux emotional folk who are often on these type of talent shows? yup, i will say that. Thats the point i was trying to make. again...we agree to disagree... . [Edited 10/19/08 9:54am]

I`m glad the judges aren`t that harsh, that they would pass on every idol-contestant who doesn`t have a voice like Donny Hathaway or Aretha Franklin....
I would rather compare her to Kelly Clarkson or Carrie Underwood. Compared to those girls, LouLou Lamotte have a much more unique voice.
