Spears Scores Record-Setting Hot 100 Jump

Another week, another record-breaking jump to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. Britney Spears makes a near-maximum 96-1 rise with "Womanizer," returning to the top of the list for the first time since her debut single "...Baby One More Time" hit No. 1 in January 1999.

This is the third time in the past two months that the mark for the biggest jump to No. 1 has been shattered. On the Hot 100 dated Sept. 6, T.I. soared 71-1 with "Whatever You Like" and last week he sprinted 80-1 with "Live Your Life."

Spears' single is spurred by first-week download sales of 286,000, the biggest opening-week tally by a female artist since Nielsen SoundScan began tracking digital downloads in 2003, besting Mariah Carey's take for "Touch My Body" by just over 200 units.

In between her nearly 10-year gap between No. 1s, Spears has placed four other top 10s on the Hot 100, the last being "Gimme More," the first single from her last set, "Blackout." That song jumped 68-3 last October with first-week download sales of 179,000.

"Womanizer" previews Spears' sixth studio set "Circus," due Dec. 2 via Jive.

No. It peaked at #9 but it would've went to #1 if digital downloads were included. That was in 2004 when they weren't factored into the equation.

...Baby One More Time was her only #1 single until now.

Let me put this into context this is #1 driven by downloads its unlikely it will do any better on airplay then any of her other hits.

Britney was more of an album artist in the US.

Exactly, just going to say that, she is not a big strong singles artist despite everyone knowing her songs, that mostly came from her getting video play.

Come on, it's a rewrite of "Ooh Ooh Baby" with even worse vocals (if that's possible). Let's not celebrate the mediocre.

Who cares if the song is bad? I hate it too but seriously, I'm just glad she's still alive! I never thought she'd bounce back THIS quickly.

I love "Ooh Ooh Baby" boxed

I think people are just glad she's got her weaves and her cooch under control, nothing to do wtih music really, but the charts haven't meant anything for ages now.

good for her, but I don't like the song at all and I don't see it growing on me at all the way her other stuff did. Even though I was always hating on her, even songs like Gimmie More, Toxic, etc. had better melodies

Maybe if Janet had lost her mind and turned into a damn fool after the Superbowl fiasco her albums would have done better since people like to congratulate celebrities after they screw up. hmmm Since Janet doesn't have any children to endanger, it probably wouldn't have worked for her. sad

it will probably be at number 1 for like a week or 2 and than fall off the charts and be forgotten. i rather her "comeback" with good songs

It flew up the charts on its sales, which is always been her strong point, shes not big at getting airplay. And as far as the song being good or bad, when has that been a measuring stick for a number hit? i mean must we run down the "ice ice baby's" and "informer" and "macarena" just to name a few. And lets not forget this years classic awful number one "touch my body" which is a song Mariah should have never even out her name on as writing it.
