Brothers Johnson "I'll Be Good To You" has gone gospel

Listening to the radio this morning, this song came on. It's by Bishop Noel Jones. It's called "It's Not About Us". I really like it, but it is a total rip off of "I'll Be Good To You."

I know this is not that uncommon, but I'm not a big fan of turning secular songs into gospel trax.

Here's the song:

Gospel music capitalizing on the sounds of secular music is nothing new.

Donnie McClurkin made "Ooh Child" a gospel song so people have done that for a while, it's modern gospel's way of paying a tribute to R&B songs after so many artists made gospel songs and interpolated it to rhythm and blues music. biggrin

I think the original has a religious subtext. This is a natural extension.

The difference with Ooh Child is that Donnie didn't blatenly take the song and turn it into something else. He and Kirk stuck to the original and added some lyrics.

I know. I have been in churches and heard so many different r&b songs that have been converted to gospel. The funniest is converting "Candy" from Cameo into a gospel song. I was laughing in church when I heard that one.

Candy?!? Really??? lol. I know I would have lost it too, even in church. I just can't imagine hearing that bassline in church without laughing.

To make matters worse, my cousin was sitting near me and she started singing the chorus to "Candy" in the middle of church.

Gigolos Get Lonely Too always reminded me of that song, too.

I've heard a choir doing a song over the melody to Gigolos. I laughed my SSA off at church on that one also.
