It is reminiscent of Controversy and Sexuality, in the same vein, stylistically very similar, also lyrically, and most probably inspired by but I don´t really hear an actual sample there....sounds more like they replayed some portions.

lol Damn, is Prince getting paid for this? If VainAndy doesn't like this, then he'll never like anything this century. Wonder what Prince'll make of this.

VA would love Rihanna's take of the MPLS sound if the engineer can get that drum machine to hit a little bit harder. VA doesn't like drum sounds to be smooth out of their harshness at all!!! lol

Yeah i mean if you have to sample a damn linn drum and the simplicity of it, than you need to find another job

It's heavily quantized though which is what sets it apart from a real Prince record. No funk.

I never thought of that, one can only hope that something like "the time" rubbed off on her, because we know nothing rubbed off on Beyonce from the duet with Prince, except maybe saying you recorded alot of songs and then putting out 10.

well jay-z sampled him...

Dr. Dre sampled him...

Prince sampled prince...with the crystal ball sample on Violet the organ grinder...

Cam'ron sampled the hell out of "Diamonds and Pearls"

Maybe Prince really likes Cam'ron too. shrug

Yeah she is totally ripping off "Controversy"...

These kids today have no originality, they just steal, steal, steal...

it's all about the image and the money for them, not the art.

The saddest part is that so many people will listen to it and have no
clue that it's a straight rip-off of Prince and they will think Rhianna
is so good and original.

A Prince sample = THIS hip-hop generation's George Clinton sample

Just like the case of too many rappers (especially west coast) of 88-93 sampling George Clinton and/or any P-Funk all-star, the rapper of today are going to be sampling most of the Prince music catalog.

nod I was gonna say....

The sound is Prince-lite, not unlike something Andre would've done.

I don't mind the song, but I really hope it doesn't become a single (that is, if it hasn't already) because if it does, I'll have to put up with the ignorant young homos I know hearing me blasting old school Prince and asking who did the hot "Rihanna remix". hrmph

If this is going to ever be released, I’d strongly suggest giving Prince co-writing credit and mentioning this whenever possible in public.

For a similar example, listen to the two tracks below. The first was written by Bob Dylan. The second one was mostly also (with no writing credit).

Only after some behind-the-scenes negotiations after Mr. Stewart's record was released did Rod admit to an "unconscious revision" and agreed to share the royalties with Mr. Dylan. wink

And just like this case, the original is far more gritty while the remake is far more universal.

I don't know. I'd probably just suggest that it's a perfect opportunity for you to educate some young minds, regardless of whether they seem to believe you in the moment or not.

And you don't even have to be defensive; they do. wink lol

I look at this the same way that I do all covers/sampling:

A majority of listeners will be ignorant. But some small percentage will no doubt check out Prince's music where they may not have previously.

And that's just a little less ignorance than before.

I have tried to educate some of the people I know over and over and over, but to no avail. It's like talking to a brick wall, really. Music apparently begins and ends with the Pussycat Dolls, if you ask them.

I really don't understand this phenomenon of 20-something gay men listening to music that would embarass a 12 year old girl.

Its because we love to dance and there arent any other artists doing upbeat dance music.

They did indeed sample the Linn drums ( like the producer REALLY had a Linn Drum 1 in his studio to make this song rolleyes ) but thats what every producer has done....Prince made that effect and sounds from the machine...he generally cannot be credited for them however...how can you copyright a snare or a hi hat?

Just imagine going to court over a half a second sample. giggle

fuck those drums in rhianna's song, they don't even sound like real linndrum.

no saturation, reverb or anything, and not even any phasers on the hi hits or snares!

i can make a better sounding beat than that!

the sad thing about rihanna is she is not even talented. and can't bring NOTHING to this song. anyone could sing this song and it would be a hit.

she can't dance/perform and she has an okay voice.

Im tired of her already. She doesn't have an interesting personality and well i have detected some arrogance. and its not cute.

Yep. For example, I would rather hear the Pussy Cat Dolls do this song. They can't sing either, but at least they perform well live.

Although disappointing, I'm not surprised Stargate gave this track to Rihanna. Now I bet she'll be in a video with a short blow-out, long black coat, thigh-high stockings, ankle boots, all the while pretending to play a guitar in HD slow motion cinematography. ( rolleyes First MJ, now Prince, LOL. )

And I know what U mean about the arrogance. The part that's funny about that is when "artists" like this are conceited but insist on pretending to be modest and humble, LOL. disbelief

the PCDs aren't any better and all there performances are redundant and look like work out videos or recycled britney spears moves. The PCDs have NOTHING special about them. They can't compare to spice girls.

anyways I don't like prince but i will say that he had a right to be arrogant. He produced and wrote his songs and performed them with instruments.

RIHANNA does nothing but show her cooch, wear skimmpy clothes, look cute, and sing however they tell her too and sing what songs is given to her
