That's funny though because I'm listening to that song right now, but I love every song on that album tho, OFF THE WALL=MJ at his funkiest! Great album.

He was channeling James Brown on those verses.

In musical terms "soul" simply means that the performer makes their audience believe what they're singing, to portray great feeling and emotion.
That makes Mike one of the most consistantly soulful perfomers in music to this day. But naturally props are withheld because it's Michael Jackson.

Exactly. The guy never lost his 'soul'. The passion and intensity in his voice was still there.
I think they're confusing soul with sounding joyful.

Right. I'm tired of hearing people saying that he did 'cos it's just bullshit.

Singing your heart out to me is soulful rather than the oohing and aahing, ho's and hee hee hee that his singing has evolved into. Most of his songs on Off The Wall, a couple on Thriller (Billy Jean, Human Nature) and a few others (Liberian Girl, Who Is It, Will You Be There, Stranger In Moscow)have captured his true soul, most of the others I can't stand to listen to. Please tell me what the fuck he's singing in Blood On The Dance Floor, he seems to be singing with great feeling and emotion in that song as well but I fail to find the "soul" there.

So it has to be every track he sings in order to be considered soulful. Yeah, okay.

The worst track is definitely 'I Can't Help It'. The singing is great but the background music is so cheesy.
The rest of the tracks range from very good to outstanding.

Thinking about it, Invincible has plenty of believable, soulful performances on it and that's his most recent album, so...

Yesssss! Michael sounds EXCELLENT in this song (as well as on the entire album), and Louis Johnson tore it UP on this track. (I love Thunder Thumbs, he's my favorite bass player. biggrin).

omg What?!

Not only have U insulted one of the best songs by Michael Jackson in history, but also Stevie Wonder's excellent background vocal arrangement. mad

lol Ha, ha, but that's your opinion so I'm not upset. LOL. It's amazing how one person may be in love with this song (as I am), and another can absolutely hate it. I know of others who always skip this track while listening to OTW.

It is! It wasn't worthy of being on an otherwise phenomenal album.
I consider it the only bad song on the album.

Seriously, great?
Don't Stop, Rock With You and Off The Wall are GREAT.
I Can't Help It just doesn't feel like it's going anywhere. It's repetitive and again that background music in my opinion is really really bad.
Girfliend is a lovely song with a nice melody and at least has some variation.

I still love Stevie Wonder.

Watch my Eddie Murphy video. lol

The only variation in "Girlfriend" is "nucca, I stole your girlfriend". lol

Whereas "I Can't Help It" is poetic... but different strokes for different folks. wink

LOL! That's right! See, U know what I'm sayin'.

lol

It's funny U all mention "Girlfriend" to compare to "I Can't Help It." I can listen to that song (I think it's really cute. giggle), although it's not one of my favorites. But I'll admit, the only song I usually skip on OTW is "It's The Falling In Love." *Shudders negatively* I've disliked that one since I was 6 years old, and I still can't acquire a taste for it, LOL.

That and "Girlfriend" is a'ight in terms of vocal approaches. lol Both of them "bubblegum" compared to the rest of OTW. smile But I kinda love "It's the Falling in Love" though. Maybe it's the soft rock/R&B mix of it though "Girlfriend" is technically that too. There are things to like about both though. I did like the bass in "Girlfriend", lol.

I don't hate either song but compared to the others... uh-uh... still doesn't take away that it's one of Michael's finest moments in his long career. smile
