This is one of the few Teena albums I never have attempted to listen to. How is it? Shangri Lai is the one song that I can't stop listening to when I had this CD. and also, I think Out on a Limb was on this CD as well. I'm just not thinking right now my head is so far up this albums ass: does anybody else love the "nooooo!"s at the tail end of the title track as much as I do? ROTFL I get tickled pink EVERYtime it never gets old LOL when it comes to picking the #1 Teena Marie album, I simply CANNOT do it... I love all the ones I own in their own way... @Ottensen - I suggest you try It Must Be Magic from top to bottom or Lady T perhaps... This is the best. I dont' think I skip any of the songs. I seem to recall that they were planning to remaster the four albums that she recorded for Motown. So far, they've only done 'Wild And Peaceful' and 'It Must Be Magic'.

Actually, Teena is still with Cash Money, but she hasn't decided if she's going to release "Congo Square" on their label. She said "CS" will be out some time next year. But she will be selling some spiritual music and her artwork on her website, www.teenamarie.com Yes, she's an artist, too, and she's really good. You can see an example of her artwork on "Sapphire"[If you have it] of a Phoenix rising from the ashes with a poem for one of her friend's grandmother who died, and also for the Hurricane Katrina Victims. She said a percentage of the proceeds from her artwork and spiritual music will go towards her charity "Colored Pencils" which gives art supplies to poor inner city children who are interested in art. Last Christmas, she collected a lot of art supplies for these children. I've heard the new www.teenamarie.com with the TM Store should be up and running soon.
Back to Teena and Cash Money, She did say early this year that she was no longer with them, but apparently things has changed since then because she is now saying she's still with them. She's still good friends with Cash Money.I do know they show her a lot of respect and let her do want she wants. And from what I've heard her say recently, she has been talking to other labels to release "CS" on, but she doesn't want to put it out there yet. Also, her daughter Alia Rose has signed a major deal, but again Teena doesn't want to put that out there just yet either. The concept of "Congo Square' in her own words -- "Congo Square is a place in New Orleans where ... slaves were allowed to dance and sing on Sundays. ... It's kind of a tribute to a lot of the jazz musicians that came through New Orleans (and) the people that I loved when I was growing up -- Sarah Vaughn, Ella Fitzgerald, Nancy Wilson, Duke Ellington, Louis Armstrong -- and then a lot of the younger jazz artists now (such as) Jill Scott and Erykah Badu. She recently gave New York fans at her concert a taste of "CS" and it garnered great reviews. She has a beautiful duet with "Howard Hewett, one with Nancy Wilson, and of course, her daughter Alia. She said that Alia did most of the background on Congo Square". It's amazing because I can't tell their voices apart at times. I thought her answer to this question was really funny in a recent interview FP: As a Caucasian R&B artist, do you feel you always have to prove something? TM: You know what? Usually nobody ever asks me that. I don’t really look at myself as any color. I just love music, I make music and I think that transcends in my music. I really don’t like that word; it seems like a pair of shoes, like I’m wearing my Louis Vuittons today and I wore my “Caucasians” yesterday (everyone bursts into laughter). I’ve never felt like that. She also told another interviewer that her eyes are green when he call her a blue-eyed soul singer I LOVE ALL OF TEENA'S MUSIC SHE PLAYS SEVERAL INSTRUMENTS...AND PLAYS THE THE HELL OUT OF ALL OF THEM...HAVE Y'ALL SEEN HER BEAT THOSE CONGA DRUMS WHEN SHE SINGS RICK JAMES' "LOVE GUN" IN CONCERT? I wrote in my previous post that Teena did say early this year that she wasn't with Cash Money anymore, but just last month she said she was still with them. From my understanding, she's been talking to other labels, and she's doesn't know if she's going to release "Congo Square" on the Cash Money label or another label. I guess we'll have to wait and see when "CS" is released hopefully some time next year. I must say I'm really surprised that Teena told KJLH that she was going the independent route again with the new CD because she's been so steadfast on her decision to never do that again. I know that releasing "Passion Play" on her own label, Sarai Records in '94 really stressed her out when the album disappeared almost as quickly as it had come due to marketing. She said she would go to cities to promote "PP" and it wasn't in the stores, and she was like what's going on here. Teena has since received the royalties from the album and she's has sold copies at concerts and on her website.
She will be selling her new inspirational CD [I haven't heard the title of that yet], artwork and other stuff on her web site when it's back up and running.

Yeah,Teena has told horror stories about releasing a CD independently.'Passion Play' never even made it to many record stores.Fans had a hard time finding it.I don't think she wants to go down that road again.

I stopped buying her full albums in the late 1980s. The last full album I bought of her's before buying a greatest hits collection years later was "Starchild". Her Motown albums were much better. As for her late 1980s albums, I never heard an uptempo track on the radio and that's why I didn't buy them. Assuming they were "all ballad" albums, I dropped my support because if someone can't throwdown some funk, then they need to sit their ass down. Andy is a four letter word.

I bought all of her albums except for the 1990 album 'Ivory' and the 1994 independently-released 'Passion Play'.I agree with you,the four albums she recorded for Motown are her best work. The first Epic album 'Robbery' is also very good.

I'm even starting to see it on some of her slow jam collections. "How Can You Resist It?" makes me somewhat sad everytime I hear it because it reminds me of my ex. Not sad enough to stop listening to it, however. LOL! I love the acoustic nature of it, though.

Yeah, as long as she doesn't go the Britney-Brooke Hogan-dumb starlet route. If her voice is half as good as mom's (or even half as hot as she is - how old is she anyway? I don't wanna feel too guilty about the things I'd do to her in my mind! ), she'll do fine as long as she does REAL music.

Back to the music, Alia is in the studio working on her CD. now see you said a mouthful there! Who is Peter? An old flame and baby daddy? I never heard Teena with anyone after she and Rick busted up way back in the day. I guess she was able to keep her private life private. Well at least you have cleared up one rumor that people were insuinating here on the Org when Rick died, that he was secretly Teena's baby daddy. Sounded juicy but I couldn't buy that Teena would not reveal the truth after Rick died. Thanks for clearing this up! "Remember, one man's filler is another man's killer" -- Haystack
