I recently *cough*found
this album about a week ago maybe
I have yet to *cough*extract

maybe I'll do that today

about Emerald City though
that was once my fav Teena album
(when I experienced it on vinyl)
my faves from there are "Shangri La"
and "Sunny Skies"... there's more
I'm sure... I'm just not thinking right now

my head is so far up this albums ass:

razz
does anybody else love the
"nooooo!"s at the tail end
of the title track as much
as I do? ROTFL lol
I get tickled pink EVERYtime lol
it never gets old LOL

when it comes to picking the
#1 Teena Marie album, I simply
CANNOT do it... I love all the ones
I own in their own way...

@Ottensen - I suggest you try
It Must Be Magic from top to bottom
or Lady T perhaps...

Man,I LOVE this album! I've done a few threads about it.It really is hard to pick a favorite Teena Marie album, but 'Robbery' would definitely be a strong contender. The latin-flavored slow jam "Stop The World" is quite possibly my favorite Teena Marie song.

Playboy is my favorite on Robbery. Its hard for me 2 get into the Epic Records albums just because the Gordy label looks like it fits better with her voice. cry bawl ANYONE FEEL ME?.

I have never heard Emerald City or Naked.....I will definitley try after this thread.

Hmm I have this album and haven't posted yet.

I don’t think it’s her best but it’s one of my favorites. Actually, I think the only song I didn’t care for was Crocodile Tears.

I just think Behind the Groove is one of hottest songs ever and IMO Teena is highly underrated. These young girls could learn a lesson from her but I guess they’d have to learn to a play an instrument or two first.

This isn't one of my favorite Teena albums boxed Like most albums released in the late 80s,it's got alot of those annoying drum machines and synths.Still, there are a few bright spots. The singles "Ooh La La La" and "Work It" are very good.

CORRECTION: This Teena Marie album had way more drum machine programming & synths than the more natural sounding Naked To The World.

THIS was her best album ever. It Must Be Magic was a great, great album. I wore out the grooves on two of those albums, but Emerald City? Can't be beat.

hey BG what up? what are your fave tracks from this album? do you like Naked to the world too??

Yeah I do like Naked To The World. I like all of Teena's material. I have so much respect for her as an artist. She has the whole package. Great songwriter, very good musician and one of the best female vocalists ever, in my mind. Teena, Chaka and Minnie are my all time fave female vocalists. Oh and Karen Carpenter! My favorite song on Emerald City hands down is "You So Heavy". The simple fact that a woman was so in tuned to Hendrix type rock and blended it in with her thang, to have that element in "You So Heavy", is a MAJOR turn on coming from a female vocalist. Teena had Stevie Ray do his best impersonation of Hendrix towards the end of this song. And then for Teena to leave in Stevie doing his Voodoo Child type muffing on the guitar, tells me all I need to know about this woman. Totally showed where her head was at. She was like "Hey Prince, you're not the ONLY one in the 80's who can evoke Hendrix!" Someone who writes and produces her own shit, yaeh, I LOVE that song. I did a thread about "You So Heavy" in this forum a few years ago and nobody wanted to fuck with it. I was like "STILL cool. Hell, even better. There is a peace in knowing that Teena and myself are the only two people who digs this song!" wink The sheer vesatility that she shows on both sides of this album is amazing.
[Edited 10/9/08 0:46am]

We're about the same age, and for years, years, years, I never knew it was Stevie Ray Vaughn on that song, but loved it as one of my favorites. This album was my absolute favorite of hers, and You So Heavy one of my all-time favorite songs, precisely because of the guitar work.

Even now...it just ROCKS!

And yes, Emerald vs. Purple, the paisley telecaster, the eclecticism of the album, all *screamed* Prince to me, but I thought I was delusional.

I'm about to play Robbery
and sit out on the lanais
wit my spiked lemonade cool

now again... does anybody love the
"nooooo!"s at the tail end

something is telling me
Naked To The World just HAD
to have been a dope LP
if Lauryn Hill interpolated "Ooh La La La"
(see "Fu-Gee La")

@paisleypark4 - I kinda sorta
know what you mean about the
Gordy/Epic transition
and "Playboy" is my fav
I sampled that too on a remix razz

@banks - yeah the "777-.." bit is a trip
I never noticed the 9311
I wish I still had to vinyl
so I could go look closely
I sold my vinyl back it was so
scratched (that's how you know
an album was GREAT)

@Jackie - yes "Behind The Groove" is dreamy love
"uh lemme take you to Xanadu?

and where's that?

behind the groove...
whooooo!
"

I live for that spoken intro
so funky... and zesty

Well I did by the Cash Money albums cause I just wanted to hear something new. There were some good moments on La Dona but Sapphire I didn't dig very much.

the album cover for La Dona
screamed FIERCE... but that
still didn't convince me

I think I liked her first single
"Still In Love" or "Stay In Love"
and I heard the duet with Gerald Levert
but I never got the urge

I may get it soon, it's Lady T

I like both of her Cash Money era albums, in fact, I damn near wore the Sapphire album throughout 2006 and 2007. That was my favorite album of 2006.

Really? I auditioned it in a used cd store and didn't care for it. When I see it again, I'll give it another try.

I got it years ago when she released it and since I've always been more of a sucka for her ballads, I really enjoy the mellow tracks and ballads. I haven't listened to it in a while so can't recall if there are any really funkdified tracks but my faves are: AIR I BREATHE, HYPNOTIZED, MAIN SQUEEZE & CLIMB THE WALLS.

Shadow Boxing and 365 are just 2 reasons that I love Teena's albums.. and not just the greatest hits. I have been on a mission to get CD versions of her albums... and it is not easy... some have been out of print for a while.

I got this album 2 weeks ago and it has been on heavy rotation ever since. This album was the bomb. I was skeptical to get it at first since from the late 80's and feared it would sound too 90's but it is great. There are dance tracks, funk tracks and a couple of nice ballads. This album is one of her best imo. Anyone else dig it??

I Got Yo Number is a good track. I wish Teena/Rick would have made more funk & dance tracks together.

I never heard this song until recently on a hits album. What album did it original appear on? I really like this song... Rick really showcased his singing voice on this one. I know I know what about Fire and Desire... but on this song, he sings easily (not whooping and hollering) and his voice sounds so effortless and very nice.
