If you only care about album sales, then MJ will probably always sell more than Prince.
But as far as music, MJ just doesn't have that much out there. How many solo tracks has he released? 80-90? For roughly 3 decades as a solo artist, that doesn't seem like much. |

Could MJ fans please put a hold on all their lame old MJ/Prince comparisons until MJ releases some new music?
No one doubts that MJ has sold more music than Prince, but in the last few years Prince has toured sold-out arenas, small clubs, released music, performed at the Superbowl, gave the 2004 Grammys a much need rating boost, held week long Celebrations at his recording studio, basically keeping busy in a positive way. Hell, even with the threatened lawsuits, we got a funky new song.
In the last few years MJ has been aquitted of child molestation, lip-synched at a couple of award shows, promised a fund-raising song for Katrina victims, and shown up at various locations in the worst diguises ever. Until MJ decides to release some new music or perform some LIVE shows, I really wish MJ fans would stop taking out their anger on Prince and Prince fans. We are not the reason MJ is making you wait a million years for new music or performances. | |

By your metric of success, this is a disappointment for Prince, but I think it's pretty good. What is so annoying about threads like these is that they pit Prince and Michael Jackson against each other. Let's face it: Michael Jackson will always be more famous and sell more albums. Prince will always be more respected by musicians and critics. Both are legends in their own right and will be remembered for decades, if not longer. Both forged their careers with hard work and diligence and became electrifying performers and provided fans with decades of brilliant music and visuals. Why can't we just celebrate both? What this thread reeks of is the same tired argument that MJ fans have been recycling here for a long time- that Michael's record sales indicate his superior relevance, talent and appeal. It's the same argument every damn time. And if that's what you care about, you win! However, I think it's really cheesy and pointless to blast Prince on a Prince website by clinging to record sales as the Holy Grail of barometers of musical talent/quality/relevance/whatever. I really like both Prince and MJ, but my appreciation for MJ has been tainted by the rabid, overzealous MJ fans that populate this site and turn every thread into some kind of war of attrition.
