Aretha Franklin vs. Tina Turner

From usatoday.com:

Who has the bigger ego? Aretha Franklin says it's Tina Turner
By Edna Gundersen, USA TODAY

The Queen of Soul is in high dudgeon. Aretha Franklin, who expressed her displeasure in February after Beyoncé referred to Tina Turner as "the queen" during a salute on the Grammy Awards, is now fuming over remarks by her royal rival.

Turner, currently on tour, was silent when Franklin dubbed Beyoncé's remark "a cheap shot for controversy." Asked to comment in a USA TODAY interview last week, Turner said, "She's the queen of soul, and I'm the queen of rock 'n' roll. There were so many kings and queens there that night. Her ego must be so big to think she was the only one." She joked, "That's how queens are!"

One queen wasn't laughing. In a statement to USA TODAY, Franklin says Turner "clearly was talking about herself" in terms of ego.

"I never figured her to resort to tacky press just to sell a few tickets," says Franklin, who adds she has never met Turner. "I really had put her in a different class — higher than that.

"No one has been more gracious … to their peers than I have, and I am confident and secure enough to do so, unlike some others."

Turner did not respond to requests for comment.

Funny, I just read an article yesterday that basically stated if there were no Aretha, Tina would be the queen.

...weighing-in at almost fifty years of rocked-up soulfulness is Anna Mae Bullock, aka Tina Turner, who (insert "arguably" if you must) might have been queen of the genre had Aretha Franklin never been born.

I love Aretha. Really I do, well maybe respect is more like it... but Tina OWNS me. I really have no choice in the matter. She always comes across as gracious. Never shady. And she gets extra points for keeping herself gorgeous all these years. Aretha is The Queen. Tina is a Goddess.worship

I heard she just added more tour dates too!

Aretha and Tina should both be bigger than this.
I have more respect for Aretha musically. Tina Turner
just rubbed me the wrong way years ago around 1984 she labeled
R&B as boring. I guess that was her explanation for doing some pop
which was not a bad thing on her private dancer album but she didn't
have to diss R&B at the time. Considering she did covers of a lot of
R&B tunes such as Al G Let's stay together and R&B put her on the map i
found her comments to be a slap in the face. I'm glad she's in good health
and still doing her thing musically but i lost interest years ago.

Actually, I wish Tina had not responded. But surely Aretha doesn’t think Tina’s going to sell extra tickets because of what she said. neutral

These two diva's are both too old for this nonsense. Re Re is the queen of soul . Tina is the queen of rock and roll. Tina is in tip top shape, RE Re needs to back away from the table. Both are legends.

Tina told it how it is, no need for Aretha to respond again, she started that shit. Aretha needs to be mad at "freakum dress" then if anything.

Yea she's always been that way. What did she say about Natalie? Must have something to do with the comparisons of Natalie's voice to hers. And Gladys? I haven't read Aretha's book yet, only Patti's and Glady's books. There never seems to be enough of drama between all of these divas, Patti's with Diana and Dionne. lol Wow, these women need to chill, but it's in a woman's nature to be competitive and jealous at times. It does get old after awhile though.

I guess Harlepolis can tell you verbatim of what she said but I know from her reactions with Natalie and Gladys that they weren't positive reactions. Natalie once said that she was playing piano in Aretha's dressing room with Aretha's band. Aretha overheard this and yelled "get that girl off my piano!" or something to that effect. Natalie said Aretha, and I can believe this, was also mad that Natalie took her "Aretha Award" when she won the Best R&B Female Vocal Grammy for "This Will Be" in 1976. Of Gladys, I guess it's more like a diva catch-22 but Gladys said she's still upset with Stevie for giving "Until You Come Back to Me" to Aretha instead of her.

Oh good grief it’s like a big ole diva fest! But Gladys and Stevie are cool now aren’t they?

I was surprised when Natalie segued into an Aretha song—I forget which one—at one of her shows. I guess either she’s over it or doesn’t care. Natalie didn’t have reason to be mad.

Where is Harle and her diva stories? Does she have a problem with Chaka Khan too?

BTW, I will never look at sesame seed buns the same way. lol

I think so but Gladys still tells Stevie she should've sung it. lol I'm sure Stevie keeps telling her "but Aretha was gonna choke me with her hambone if I didn't, I'm sorry!" lol

I love that song regardless of who sing it. Too bad Ree-Ree can't sing like that anymore. neutral

I love Tina's response "She's the queen of soul, and I'm the queen of rock 'n' roll. There were so many kings and queens there that night. Her ego must be so big to think she was the only one." She joked, "That's how queens are!"

It shows respect (no pun intended) but adds a dose of reality, and a little jab for good measure!

And she's right (despite the fact that neither is an actual queen lol). But there are multiple queens in this world, and they all probably think the world revolves around them (though Aretha could certainly lay claim to that state of being easier than Tina. HEYOOOOO!!)

To qoute Carlos Santana who worked with both and toured with TINA back in the day. he said "that she is head and shoulders beyond any soul singer, she is true soul more than any other"

I agree. This is a case of looking for drama when there aint none to be found! Tina was respectful in what she said. Aretha overreacted imo.
