Elton John "Live in Australia" (1987) one of the greatest live albums ever released, would NEVER be released today... There are many reasons the album is great, and there are even more reasons this would never be allowed to come out today by a label. First the biggest reason is that labels dont like Live releases at this point in time. But the thing that makes this album so special was the way it was done, Elton split the show in half, doing 90 minutes each set, and only releasing the first set as the album. That first set was uniqque because it was Elton and an orchestra doing original arrangements from his first few albums, mainly the classic "Elton John" label. Elton was no pulling out HITS in this show, he was doing cuts like "sixty years on" "greatest discovery" "i need you to turn to" just to name a few. But even more rare, was Eltons condition at the time, this show was the last show before Elton had throat surgery that at the time was not known if it was career ending, and you could hear the rasp in his voice all through the show, but that was the beauty of it said one critic, "Elton sang as if his life depended on it" and honestly it did, no one knew if his throat condition was cancerous at the time. However, an album like this WOULD NEVER come out today, an artist now would go in an polish it, overdub the shit out of it, drown out the audience and all other things. "We went where our music was appreciated, and that was everywhere but the USA, we knew we had fans, but there is only so much of the world you can play at once" Magne F | |
