Boyz II Men (check never go away acoustic...) Tamia (check steve harvey innerview....) Brian Mcknight (check his sunrise serenades on 94.7 the wave then come back...) D'Angelo (speaks for itself) Anthony Hamilton (charlene) Tony Toni Tone Maxwell Toni Braxton Mary J Blige TLC En Vogue (Crazy good vocals) Lauryn Hill Mariah Carey Brandy Monica Ugh. Yes. Anthony Hamilton should be on my/this list and perhaps TLC should be added. Toni Braxton and Lauryn Hill both have one decade-defining album, so I'm tempted. === Clarity Edit ==== [Edited 10/5/08 15:46pm]

D'Angelo Tony Toni Tone Lewis Taylor Me'Shell Ndegeocello Mary J. Blige Erykah Badu Jill Scott Mint Condition Brand New Heavies Maxwell If I thought about it for awhile, perhaps there'd be a couple of substitutions, but overall I think that this list is the cat's meow. And I'd add that Me'Shell is way too brilliantly elusive to be so easily defined. She'd headline a top 10 list of the overall best musical talents of the past 20 years. Many thanks . . . to the artists on this list. And I couldn't agree more with your comments on Me'Shell. She is Prince's true heir and arguably the most overlooked talent of her generation. She gets rhythm and blues, quite literally. And so much more. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

If she had a few more hits (and, man, does she have hits), she could influence more in the now. To me she's the first face/sound of 21st century soul.

For me they're too new (like Van Hunt or Robin Thicke). I'd have to extrapolate their future. And I'm not that confident/self assured about their futures yet. == help me type == [Edited 10/5/08 16:07pm]

From 1988 on up to today....hell, nobody. The house artists of the early 1990s were great but as far as R&B artists that came out after 1987, all of them sucked because they were slow as hell with either no uptempo jams whatsoever or when they did do an uptempo song, it was watered down with pop. The R&B scene became totally bland and dull. Shitney Houston really influenced folks for the worst beginning in 1985.

When it comes to a group that came out in the late 1980s that I like that actually lasted a little while, it would be Tony Toni Tone. But they still didn't have as strong a sound as those 70s and early 80s groups. Andy is a four letter word.

Johnny Gill Jodeci Mary J. Blige Tony! Toni! Toné! Donell Jones R. Kelly Guy Mariah Carey Maxwell 1983 LOL. lets pretend his first self titled album and the 'chemistry' album don't count. Hmm....for real tho, since I forgot about those JG duds, oops.... I mean "albums", I'd probably replace him with either: Silk, After 7 or D'Angelo.

Yeah, we need to also replace K-ci, and Jodeci by default, since "Little Cedric Hailey" was putting out gospel albums back in the day. . . . [Edited 10/6/08 7:29am] O.K., I get your viewpoint that slow songs=crap, but what does that have to do with the quality of the person's voice? A person could sing well, but just have crappy songs to work with.

. . . [Edited 10/6/08 7:29am] O.K., I get your viewpoint that slow songs=crap, Wrong. I love plenty of slow songs. Just very few after 1984. They have a more adult contemporary feel to them rather than a sexy after midnight, sleep with a stranger, type feel. but what does that have to do with the quality of the person's voice? A person could sing well, but just have crappy songs to work with.
Having horrible songs has absolutely nothing to do with the quality of a person's voice. Any (insert any opera singer's voice here) has a great voice. That doesn't mean that I'm going to like their their music because their voice is great. The thread didn't say "best R&B singers of the last 20 years". It said "best R&B artists of the last 20 years". The term artist covers a lot more than just singers. The music behind the singer is art also and there sure has been very little good music in the last 20 years. Anyway, the thread also said "best R&B artists of the last 20 years". R&B is short for rhythm and blues. You gotta have some speed to get a good rhythm going and there has been very little speed in the last 20 years. . . .
