Meshell in London

any of y'all go see Meshell last night at the Jazz Cafe? I swear she must be some kind of alien cuz she is just so good.
i looked around and spotted Brian Eno next to me and then i looked up at the bar and Spike Lee was watchin' too. i'm thinking "damn, what a cool gig - Meshell, Brian, SPIKE!!!" then my girlfriend looks over and ruins it for me. she says "ain't that Ali G over there?" the fool has taste after all.
great show. my third.

oh right...well she played a lot of funky shit. really really tight. not as atmospheric as her last gig i saw two years but just a lot more funk. she played right across her four albums and boy is she short. she played the bass a bit but left most of the bass duties to her bass player - a new guy, not the old one. the other two times i've seen her, she played long bits of other peoples songs but this time she only threw in a couple lines of the Police's Spirits in a Material world during her last song which was a dubby, reggae/funk thing. never heard it before. and that's the great thing: she always plays a new song. her old keyboard player, Federico Pena, was back as well. extremely cool night.

Caught Meshell on Wednesday 20th @ Jazz Cafe.
Warm-up DJ started his set with Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car", deftly mixed into"Anotherloverholenyohead"!!!
I could've gone home after that!

She was too cool for school...

When I was at Meshell's show in Detroit on 11/02/02 the DJ was mixing up a lot of old school house music. I guess he was staying true to the whole Midwestern electronic scene (Chicago House, Detroit Techno, and what not). He also mixed in Apollonia's "Sex Shooter" and he played "Gotta Have House Music" and I think he played some old CeCe Peniston or was it Crystal Waters...a lot of late 80s/early 90s club music, that's for sure. He's a great DJ.
