01 Liberty City (Murk) / The Singles Collection - "Some Lovin" - Listening to this track made me realize there is almost zero outright dance tracks chosen by orgers so far. I can see why the lyrics resonated with you so much. If I heard this in a club, I honestly wouldn't have paid any attention to the words. People don't give dance music enough credit in terms of how it can affect people lives.
02 Alice Smith / For Lovers, Dreamers and Me - "Desert Song" - As you know I already have this album and have seen Alice live more than once. This song is one of my favorites on her debut. Alice's voice really takes off during the chorus especially at the end of each line. I love that. 03 Maria McKee / High Dive - "To the Open spaces" - I very much hear the hope in this song like you do. It's light and airy, but uplifting. It really peaks in the middle where you highlighted in the lyrics. It's like stepping outside looking up into the sunshine on a brand new morning. 04 The Mechanical Forces of Love / Medicine - "As You Do" - My, how Medicine has changed since the shoegazer days when I knew them. I like the sampled guitar bits which reminds of the folktronica thing Madonna did a few years ago or what Goldfrapp is doing now. 05 Lowpass / Spinning in Infinity - "Badang" - There isn't much to this song, but it isn't bad. It might be the song I like the least on your mix. 06 Siobhan Donaghy / Ghosts - "Don't Give It Up" - This song is great! The chorus is absolutely heavenly! I looked up Siobhan quickly and of course her albums were never released in the states. I bet because they were clearly too good and above crude American tastes. I'm gonna have to do more research on this person. 07 Alice Russell / Under The Munka Moon - "Hurry On Now" - She has a really good voice. I also like the blending of styles on this track--those jazzy horns over the slow hip-hop beat. Very cool. 08 Me'Shell N'Degeocello / Cookie: The Anthropological Mix Tape - "Jabril" - This song is very deep. Even more so in the context of the tragedy that happened to your cousin. Musically it starts out very soft and tender and then the anger hits with the hard beats and electric guitar. Powerful stuff. 09 N'Dea Davenport / N'Dea Davenport - "Placement for the Baby" - This is another easygoing track--almost like the Me'Shell song but without the anger. It's nice how your mix is winding its way down musically towards the end. 10 Morcheeba / Big Calm - "The Sea" - This song sounds fantastic too. I never knew Morcheeba did cool folky stuff like this. Perfect closer to your mix. I can feel the calm in this song and it perfectly matches with the part of your life about which you wrote. Thanks for printing the lyrics to each song. It really made me pay attention to them which is not something I often do beyond a surface level. It also made me see the entire mix better as a whole and how it relates to your life which is something only Nikki's mix did. Thank you for taking all of us on this incredible journey.

Despite the large number of replies, I don't think more than a few people really listened to this one, but they should. I know all the text looks a little intimidating, but you'll be rewarded for taking the time to read along as you listen. Richard poured his heart out for this thing. Don't let his tremendous effort go to waste.

I thought it probably would throw people for a loop There certainly aren't any other House songs in any of the mixes and I liked the idea of pulling a switch and bait I don't feel the rest of the mix can be judged from the cover of the book. I can see why the lyrics resonated with you so much. If I heard this in a club, I honestly wouldn't have paid any attention to the words. People don't give dance music enough credit in terms of how it can affect people lives. I'm a lyrics guy. Always have been, always will. You know, looking back to my days in drag and prancing through dance clubs, messages in dance music were really a huge part of the art of drag. I know you guys had this out in New York, and it made its way here but in the early 90s there were dance "houses" that used to have dance offs at clubs. They weren't actual houses but groups of mostly gay guys, although some had girls, that were like a dance gang. Not violent obviously, but kind of like rivals getting together to compete on the dancefloor. Well most of these houses would get together and vogue dance. Always you listened to the lyrics because so much of the music was one houses call out to the other. Lots of house music is very spiritual actually I have this house album: 02 Alice Smith / For Lovers, Dreamers and Me - "Desert Song" - As you know I already have this album and have seen Alice live more than once. This song is one of my favorites on her debut. Alice's voice really takes off during the chorus especially at the end of each line. I love that. I was wondering if I'd be the only one to showcase her. Glad to know she's worthy of your course! Her live shows are incredible. I can never get over huge ass voices coming out of little bodies 03 Maria McKee / High Dive - "To the Open spaces" - I very much hear the hope in this song like you do. It's light and airy, but uplifting. It really peaks in the middle where you highlighted in the lyrics. It's like stepping outside looking up into the sunshine on a brand new morning. Notice, it was the only puntuation I put in any of the lyrics? Not that the listener wouldn't notice that part and how expressive the phrasing is but it's such a pinnacle. After digging my way out of the tunnel only to find myself in the desert, I wanted to revel in that crystaline blissful moment 04 The Mechanical Forces of Love / Medicine - "As You Do" - My, how Medicine has changed since the shoegazer days when I knew them. I like the sampled guitar bits which reminds of the folktronica thing Madonna did a few years ago or what Goldfrapp is doing now. Yes, I love that disjointed bits and pieces thing Could you imagine being given all the pieces in the song and then being told to create an actual song out of it? I consider that kind of thing mad genius I'd be interested to check out the other medicine albums. I had no idea there were so many! 05 Lowpass / Spinning in Infinity - "Badang" - There isn't much to this song, but it isn't bad. It might be the song I like the least on your mix. Can you elaborate why? Is it not meaty enough? I love the sparseness of the song and that deep winding bass is awesome to me. I love the sprinkling of the other effects like the crashing lighting and the sprinkling showers. Coupled with the lyrics, I think they give the song a moodiness that might not be felt in the actual music itself. I'm telling you. The first time I heard this song I freakin collapsed! Like I said, this song is the bridge It connects to Badang in a musical way as it is electronic in nature, but it sets the mood for the next song because of the meaning and beautiful way she sings her plea. 07 Alice Russell / Under The Munka Moon - "Hurry On Now" - She has a really good voice. I also like the blending of styles on this track--those jazzy horns over the slow hip-hop beat. Very cool. I guess to some people this kind of thing is simple and easy but I marvel at how people come up with this musical style and make it sound effortless. I could imagine this, I think, but to actually put it together is astounding to me. TM Juke is the gig she's hooked up with and they have some really interesting musical ideas for her voice. Love her albums for that reason. So much variation, all driven by that amazing voice 08 Me'Shell N'Degeocello / Cookie: The Anthropological Mix Tape - "Jabril" - This song is very deep. Even more so in the context of the tragedy that happened to your cousin. Musically it starts out very soft and tender and then the anger hits with the hard beats and electric guitar. Powerful stuff. This song is the secret weapon. Is that an oboe in there? I'm almost positive that's what the main wind instrument is. I love the oboe, especially because I feel it really lends a tender darkness to this song. The darkness is coupled by the lyrics and made deeper when the guitar cries it's lament. Don't know how to explain this fully but I am so hurt at the idea of her dying alone. I guess it happens everyday, but these weren't normal circumstances and I'm the only person in my family that has been to her grave. Everyone has their "reasons" for not going I guess and I won't question them but it makes me feel like I have the responsibility for remembering her and for caring for her. Many people experience the death of their loved ones firsthand and in some ways I consider that an honor, even though many are too traumatized to see it that way, and this kind of thing helps me to feel somewhat connected to her in those last moments. I would give anything to have held her hand or comforted her or cradled her head anything for her not to be alone and I guess this is my way of doing that. 09 N'Dea Davenport / N'Dea Davenport - "Placement for the Baby" - This is another easygoing track--almost like the Me'Shell song but without the anger. It's nice how your mix is winding its way down musically towards the end. Comin down off the mountain, everything is so clear.... Deee-Lite I see this mix as climbing one of those "Ultimate", type mountains. The kind that people die trying to scale. There is a definite assention and a sense of arrival and this part of the mix is coming down from that mountain, having reached the top and reflecting on the journey up there and what an achievement you have made. And yes, this was part of my selecting the song sequence. Lots of energy in the front, climbing and building and then coming back down. Just like climbing that mountain 10 Morcheeba / Big Calm - "The Sea" - This song sounds fantastic too. I never knew Morcheeba did cool folky stuff like this. Perfect closer to your mix. I can feel the calm in this song and it perfectly matches with the part of your life about which you wrote. This song is magic to me I can't ever get over this song. It's the perfect vehicle for so many things I feel and see inside. Songs like Sao Paolo, Moog Island and Love and Fear showcase the absolute brilliance of this woman's voice. Simply stunning. You should check them out Thanks for printing the lyrics to each song. It really made me pay attention to them which is not something I often do beyond a surface level. It also made me see the entire mix better as a whole and how it relates to your life which is something only Nikki's mix did. I know that most people can't be bothered with lyrics but really they are essential to telling the story of this mix. Had to include them. I really relate to Nikki's mix exactly because of the lyrics Thank you for taking all of us on this incredible journey. Awww thank you for this So far, 14 more people have listened to the mix than entered the project so I consider that a victory Besides, My Herman Wouke Novels might set the project members back by months . Disclaimer: As with I did with some of the others, I'm typing this while listening so forgive me if my typing is all over the place
01 Liberty City (Murk) / The Singles Collection - "Some Lovin" - The minute I heard the first few seconds of this song I knew I was going to love it. The throbing beat is addictive, and makes me want to get sweaty in a dark club with some strangers. But other than just being a good dance song, its actually got lyrics that make sense too. 02 Alice Smith / For Lovers, Dreamers and Me - "Desert Song" - I adore Alice Smith, and I adore her voice! The instrumentation hear makes me wet my pants as well (especially the piano and violin) and who can't relate to these lyrics in some way...Actually listening to this again now, this might be my favorite song of her's? As I type this I'm singing along at the top of my lungs 03 Maria McKee / High Dive - "To the Open spaces" - This is such a mellow happy song...I'm picturing you in a convertible driving into the sunset, wind in your hair, feeling free as a bird...You should see the stupid smile on my face as I type this 04 The Mechanical Forces of Love / Medicine - "As You Do" - Wow, this is different! Like nothing I've heard in a while (but thats good!) A touch electric-y, a touch hippy-ish, a touch funky...hmmm, I wonder is the rest of the album like this?....oh and I love this... Once love has become sky, there is a universe beyond for the heart to conquer. In the dark night Venus, cloaked in her gowns of cloud, shines brightly in hopes that all who have sight will glimpse her glory. This is Venus' Solar System Valentine
05 Lowpass / Spinning in Infinity - "Badang" - This is a simple song, but the singer's voice expresses alot of emotion with few words. Such an expression of love with out saying much, I can see why you put it here 06 Siobhan Donaghy / Ghosts - "Don't Give It Up" - This song is lovely and the vocals are so sweeping and luscious. And I agree with you about the chorus. Hearing her sing it gave me that lump in my throut feeling, I love this...As Sexton said, I want to find out more about Siobhan 07 Alice Russell / Under The Munka Moon - "Hurry On Now" - These horns are making my day and her voice is so feeling...this line really made me think of you--> " Now with blind hands I claw these lonely days As my dry tears fall and roll away I can't see troubles as they dance behind my back" 08 Me'Shell N'Degeocello / Cookie: The Anthropological Mix Tape - "Jabril" - I'm actually tearing up a bit now, listening to these lyrics and just reading about your cousin. This is too much right now... 09 N'Dea Davenport / N'Dea Davenport - "Placement for the Baby" - This is a very inspirational beautiful song. I usually prefer her work with BNHs but she has a ggreatly underrated voice and this song grew on me. I like how this perks up a bit at the end as well. 10 Morcheeba / Big Calm - "The Sea" - I've been curious about Morcheeba forever, but too scatter-brained to actually get their album and listen. I like this song alot. The sound of it gels well with tracks 8 & 9 as well. This is very simple too and I'm liking that. I'd like to be sitting alone in the woods listening to this, very serene and calming lrics and music All and all, this was a wonderful mix Supa! And it's crazy how you can find these perfect songs to kind of soundtrack different parts of your life. Your experiences are beautiful and inspirational and I love how the music fits right in with it. My favorite moments here were probably Alice Smith's "Desert Song" and Siobhan Donaghy's "Don't Give It Up. Well Done!!! and sorry it took me so long to gather my thoughts [Edited 10/3/08 21:21pm] If you will, so will I

OK, you mentioned in your thread about loving orchestration and strings and all that. I LOVE that stuff too. The violin is my favorite instrument I'll accept your harsh hatred of my song Just kidding For me, the fact that the track isn't layered with all kinds of ridiculous crap allows her vocals to shine right through and there is such a sincerity in the way she sings of love that it just seals the deal for me 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

Stacey, thank you for your thoughts For me, it has been so wonderful to watch you bloom in your musical excursions You're like a Frankenstein right now. Wait, I'm not calling you a monster! You're like a baby. Is that better? Like a baby that is learning at mind boggling rates. You're like a sponge, soaking in everyones insights and suggestions, exploring frontiers you never even knew existed. I remember that time in my life and I am so happy that you are experiencing that you're my M&Mnp little sister

Glad to see it being recognized by some folks. But they're all gay 02 Alice Smith / For Lovers, Dreamers and Me - "Desert Song" - I adore Alice Smith, and I adore her voice! A touch electric-y, a touch hippy-ish, a touch funky...hmmm, I wonder is the rest of the album like this?....oh and I love this... Check my video B-Side!!! At 2:19 when you hear Brad singing "oooooh", doesn't that remind you of the Beach Boys somehow? I always think of them when I hear that part Once love has become sky, there is a universe beyond for the heart to conquer. In the dark night Venus, cloaked in her gowns of cloud, shines brightly in hopes that all who have sight will glimpse her glory. This is Venus' Solar System Valentine
: I love how the song begins, like tuning the dial looking for a station. I imagine this being the first time scientists hear humanly recognized messages from space And every time I would listen to this song at night, I would search out Venus and just stare at her and muse as the song played in my ears 05 Lowpass / Spinning in Infinity - "Badang" - This is a simple song, but the singer's voice expresses alot of emotion with few words. Such an expression of love with out saying much, I can see why you put it here YES! You get the point of the song and it's inclusion in my mix! 06 Siobhan Donaghy / Ghosts - "Don't Give It Up" - This song is lovely and the vocals are so sweeping and luscious. And I agree with you about the chorus. Hearing her sing it gave me that lump in my throut feeling, I love this...As Sexton said, I want to find out more about Siobhan I have one criticism about the song but I will only confirm it if someone guesses correctly. I get that lump thing too. The song is so sobering but staggeringly beautiful at the same time. 07 Alice Russell / Under The Munka Moon - "Hurry On Now" - These horns are making my day and her voice is so feeling...this line really made me think of you--> " Now with blind hands I claw these lonely days As my dry tears fall and roll away I can't see troubles as they dance behind my back" THAT….IS…..THE…..LYRIC…..THAT…..RESONATES……WITH……ME…..THE….. MOST sorrow is my song to slay…. That is so how I've felt. Like looking for a penny in a large room with no light. Clawing in the darkness and still finding victory 08 Me'Shell N'Degeocello / Cookie: The Anthropological Mix Tape - "Jabril" - I'm actually tearing up a bit now, listening to these lyrics and just reading about your cousin. This is too much right now... Her death has become such an integral part of my life. In ways I couldn't have expected. I had to address it and she had to be here….. Thank you for reading my thoughts 09 N'Dea Davenport / N'Dea Davenport - "Placement for the Baby" - This is a very inspirational beautiful song. I usually prefer her work with BNHs but she has a ggreatly underrated voice and this song grew on me. I like how this perks up a bit at the end as well. If you don't have her solo album it is a must HAVE! Her voice is amazing and perfect for the vision I have of my cousin's salvation and comfort in her darkest hour. 10 Morcheeba / Big Calm - "The Sea" - I've been curious about Morcheeba forever, but too scatter-brained to actually get their album and listen. I like this song alot. The sound of it gels well with tracks 8 & 9 as well. This is very simple too and I'm liking that. I'd like to be sitting alone in the woods listening to this, very serene and calming lrics and music Honestly, I cannot adequately explain how shocking this song is to me. It brings me to places and makes me feel and see in ways I can only dream. All and all, this was a wonderful mix Supa! And it's crazy how you can find these perfect songs to kind of soundtrack different parts of your life. Your experiences are beautiful and inspirational and I love how the music fits right in with it. It's truly amazing Stacey because coming into this I had no visions, certainly nothing along the lines of what this thread ended up to be. It was listening to them over and over and thinking of them and what they mean to me that's how everything became clear. I think this is the perfect illustration of music as art. It isn't something that is just made to be bought and sold. It's something that is created from the minds and the fingers and the voices of the people it comes from. And it inspires someone like me to write about the way that makes me feel, which might cause someone to paint a portrait of my garden by the sea. Music is GOD! My favorite moments here were probably Alice Smith's "Desert Song" and Siobhan Donaghy's "Don't Give It Up. Well Done!!! and sorry it took me so long to gather my thoughts no problem my dearest sweetheart. I will listen again later but after one rotation I have to say nice head fake with MURK. I actually used to own that disc and haven’t heard it in years but as soon as it opened up it all came flooding back. When I scanned the rest of the artists I knew I was going to be more than just carefree jamming.
I enjoyed every song and some artists—like Alice Russell and Maria McKee—I think I need to check out and others like N’Dea sent me down memory lane. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

Quick question to the participants. Did you find the caption in blue, preceding each lyric/write up, to be effective in putting you in the mood/mode/path of what I wrote about/the song is about? 2010: Healing the Wounds of the Past.... http://prince.org/msg/8/325740

I found the blue subheads helpful in defining the mood.

Beautiful set!! Actually, it took me awhile to get through it, because there was so much behind each chosen song, it was emotionally wrenching.... I dunno, it almost feels odd for me to say, "well, I liked this one", or "that one" best, because of each song's specific purpose...I guess I can say that the most powerful moments for me were hearing both Meshell's "Jabril" and Ndea's "Placement for the Baby" in this context, though.... I think I've always approached music from the sound and feel aspect, and often I'm not even aware of the actual song lyrics until much later...sometimes years later, .... so getting a chance to reflect on the power of the words and what they convey for you--well, that was quite an experience! A beautiful and inspirational one!!! OK, on the flip, I Definitely gotta check out more Mechanical Forces, Lowpass, and Siobahn! Making notes now, that shit was bangin, !!!! Again, excellent set!!! ... [Edited 10/8/08 9:58am] " I've got six things on my mind --you're no longer one of them." - Paddy McAloon, Prefab Sprout
