I have really been procrastinating on a "Biggest Hits of George Michael and Wham" single-disc compilation

that someone at work asked me to make for her. She is 50 years old and would only know the biggest hits.

So maybe I should ask you what songs you hear most often on the radio still, in your area?

I consulted iTunes too.

Ah, let me see what y'all come up with.

I would love to see a list of "longest running #1s" or something for George Michael and Wham.

I mightas well tell you now, I will not be including "Too Funky" or anything newer than that.

Nevermind, here's what I came up with.

1. I Want Your Sex (Part 1)
2. Freedom '90
3. Faith
4. Father Figure
5. Careless Whisper
6. Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me (with Elton John)
7. Praying For Time
8. One More Try
9. Monkey (Remix)
10. Kissing A Fool
11. A Different Corner
12. I Knew You Were Waiting For Me (with Aretha Franklin)
13. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go
14. The Edge Of Heaven
15. I'm Your Man
16. Everything She Wants (Remix)
17. Last Christmas

Had to nix the holiday track because it put the mix at 81 and a half minutes

Cinnie, you better find a way to fit "Freedom" on that CD! It was certainly a bigger hit than "The Edge of Heaven." Other than that, I think you nailed it.

Here are the top-10 hits on the US Hot 100:

1. Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go [1]
2. Careless Whisper [1]
3. Freedom [3]
4. Everything She Wants [1]
5. I'm Your Man [3]
6. A Different Corner [7]
7. The Edge of Heaven [10]
8. I Knew You Were Waiting (For Me) [1]
9. I Want Your Sex [2]
10. Faith [1]
11. Father Figure [1]
12. One More Try [1]
13. Monkey [1]
14. Kissing a Fool [5]
15. Praying for Time [1]
16. Freedom '90 [8]
17. Don't Let the Sun Go Down on Me [1]

18. Too Funky [10]
19. Jesus to a Child [7]
20. Fastlove [8]

The next biggest hit would be "Waiting for That Day," which peaked at #27.

Replace #6 & #10 with Young Guns (Go for It) & Freedom (1984 Original) and you're good to go! cool

That was a tough call to make. However the CD is already full at 77 minutes and some seconds. Only room for one "Freedom"!

And thanks for posting these chart positions.. I guess I did alright!

Yeah I would have really liked to include "Fastlove" and "Waiting For That Day" in addition to "Freedom '84" and maybe something earlier than 1984 like "Club Tropicana", but it was a space issue more than anything. Also, I didn't realize "Jesus To A Child" performed so well!

no no no! It's not a tough call when you're including "The Edge of Heaven." I thought you said you only wanted the big hits. Make up your mind, man! lol

You could put "Freedom" right before "Faith" to juxtapose the original track with the organ prelude. Alternatively, you could make the former the lead track and the latter the final one just to bring it full circle.

Also, I didn't realize "Jesus To A Child" performed so well!

Yeah, IIRC single sales were very high because he had been away for a while.

George's singles career is very interesting. As a solo artist, he is credited with 7 #1 singles in the US and the UK. However, only his 2 hit duets with Aretha Franklin and Elton John made it to the top spot in both countries. The 4 big Faith singles and "Praying for Time" made it to #1 in the US while "Careless Whisper," "A Different Corner," the Five Live EP, "Jesus to a Child," and "Fastlove" made it to #1 in the UK. ("Careless Whisper" made it to #1 in both places, but it was credited to "Wham! featuring George Michael" in the US.)

Well I had to make it quickly, I've actually already delivered it.

That's a good idea.

What I did was put Freedom '90 before Faith, and on the tracklisting I gave her I listed it as "Freedom" which could make one assume is the old one, then I cut off the intro to Faith. lol

falloff

What else I do....

-cut off the creepy monkey sound effect on the intro to "Monkey (Remix)"
-I did not mention on the tracklist about edits or remix versions I put on there
-boosted the volume on certain songs to give it the loudest yet balanced listen possible.
-There was some weird studio band cheer quietly at the very end of "Edge Of Heaven". Deleted.

I made sure to include the shortened version of "Careless Whisper" with no synth intro, just straight into the drums

It would've been unnecessary; that's the definitive version. Your co-worker probably hasn't heard the album version unless she owned Make It Big and I doubt she's ever heard the Wexler version.

She asked me if I had George Michael stuff, and I said yeah.

She asked me if I could make a mix for her, and I said sure, do you want any Wham stuff on it?

She stared back blankly and replied "just make sure it has Faith and Father Figure".

This isn't a box set request. lol

Even though she's 50, she may love to hear some things she isn't familiar with. There is plenty to fill a second disc ~ always make your audience stretch a bit.(says the 59 year old) giggle What a nice co~worker you are. She will love it!

In her case, I think the 14 hits that aren't "Faith" and "Father Figure" are the stretch lol

you really should have made it 2 discs.

i have a 4-disc set that i made years ago, and it's just too bloated. everything on it is good, but it's overkill.

been trying to whittle it down to 3, or maybe even 2, but the breaks in years/phases are hard to work out.
