Sounds goos but a bad idea. I can't stand the quality of compressed files. They won't be making any $ from me.

ugh SD cards, so does that mean I would have to buy it, then enter the code on the website to upload all the tracks and then put them onto an mp3 player? WEll guess what, I would still burn it onto a CD

You know they could put uncompressed stuff on a SD card!? But still, stupid idea.... I wanna buy unerasable CDs, not erasable SD cards... besides, I would loose them all the time, 'cause they are so tiny!

http://www.comcast.net/ar...ory.Cards/ Like vinyl and cassettes gave way to the CD, CDs are now going to give way to the SD card format. I'm in the middle of my doing HTML homework so here's the text Companies joining to push music on memory cards.
Just as vinyl once gave way to compact discs as the main physical medium for music, could CDs be replaced now by a fingernail-sized memory card? Perhaps not entirely, but SanDisk Corp., four major record labels and retailers Best Buy Co. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc. are hoping that albums sold on microSD memory cards will at least provide an additional stream of sales. The companies were expected to unveil plans Monday to sell memory cards loaded with music in the MP3 format, free of copy protections. Called "slotMusic," the new format is meant to address two intertwined trends. Most albums are still sold in a physical format — 449 million were sold on CDs in 2007, while 50 million were sold digitally, according to Nielsen SoundScan — yet CDs are decreasingly popular. Albums sold on CD dropped almost 19 percent last year. Given this, the record labels — Vivendi SA's Universal Music Group, Sony BMG Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group Corp. and EMI Group PLC — are hoping slotMusic can be another physical revenue source — and one that is more versatile than CDs, given the kinds of gadgets people carry around these days. Unlike when the CD was introduced and people had to buy new players, many people already have the ability to play slotMusic albums, since many cell phones and multimedia players support microSD cards. These new albums will come with a small USB dongle that lets buyers use them with computers, too. "Particularly in this kind of economic climate, the idea of being able to use an electronic device you already own to enjoy music rather than going out and buying a dedicated player is pretty compelling," said Daniel Schreiber, who heads the audio-video business unit at SanDisk, which created the microSD card format and is working on the technology behind slotMusic. Schreiber said slotMusic albums will be sold on 1 gigabyte microSD cards, which means they will be able to hold a full album and related content such as liner notes and cover art. Buyers will be able to use extra space on the cards to hold songs and photos from their own collections. The cards and dongles will come in boxes similar to current CD packaging, and Schreiber expects the cost of slotMusic releases to be "in the ballpark" of current CD prices. It's not yet known exactly when — or how many — albums will be initially sold in the format, but Schreiber expects retailers to give a "sizable amount of shelf space" to slotMusic albums. The albums are expected to debut at multiple retailers, including Best Buy and Wal-Mart stores in the U.S., and later in Europe. Rio Caraeff, executive vice president of Universal Music Group's eLabs digital music unit, said the label will initially release about 30 titles in the slotMusic format. The titles will include old and new albums, such as one by singer Akon. "We want to provide the benefits of digital music to people who go to physical retail environments," he said. Asked whether he sees the format taking the place of the CD, Caraeff said, "I think we would certainly hope that would be the case, but I don't think we are so tied to that." NPD Group entertainment analyst Russ Crupnick sees a potential for slotMusic to emerge as a compelling format. He said the industry needs "desperately" to give people a new reason to head back into the music sections at brick-and-mortar stores. "Not that we want them out of the gaming section, but once they're done looking at `Guitar Hero' we want them to come look at the music section," he said. copyright Copyright 2008 The Associated Press. Oh, that's what I've been seeing hanging up at Best Buy.
Not interested. I'd go back to vinyl before I buy those things.

This isn't going to replace CDs. It's an additional medium that will probably only be used for the biggest selling albums.
Remember mini-CDs? Probably about like that. Interesting idea though, for people who only buy a CD to suck it into their ipod and then never pull it out again.

I don't understand. Save gas and hassle and just download.
I still buy CDs because I want packaging, liner notes and session info, but if this isn't a demand folks should just stay home and put it on their ipod, usb or cellphone. later.... OK it puts the pkging & notes on the memory stiks, but I'm talking hardcopy and I don't want to print my own copy. [Edited 9/22/08 13:18pm] test

Sorry but my mom aint digging the new Tony Bennet or Johnny Mathis on a fucking chip the size of a quarter, total freaking stupidity, but thats the industry. I don't even know what the hell an SD card is. I'm assuming though that it has something to do with computers and downloading which means paying a high priced monthly fee for a high speed internet service. It almost makes me glad there is no good new music anymore because not only would you have to pay for the damn card, but also for the internet service in order to get the music, if I'm assuming correctly. It ain't worth it for only one new album a year which is Prince because no one else makes anything worth a damn these days.
As long as the old stuff is still out there on CD and vinyl, they can keep whatever this new format is for the new bullshit music. Andy is a four letter word.

>>>> Micro SD card... the same thing you can put into some mobile phones! The bigger brother of the Mirco SD card, the SD card, the one bboy posted below, fits into digital cameras! VainAndy: SD card - that's about the actual size, too. You can store a lot of info on one - nowadays you could fit a whole DVD on one along with the CD and the artwork. You'd need a card reader, though. Personally, I think flash drives are the way to go since all they require is a USB port, which almost all computers have and the data transfer rates are higher with the newer solid state flash drives. Its inevitable that the media format is going to change but I don't think CDs are going anywhere just yet. The industry is trying new things. They just promote it like its a done deal to see if the public will accept it as such.

I'd rather stick to my house phone so I can avoid pests by not answering it and saying I wasn't home if they confront me later. With a cell phone, it is always with you so there's not excuse for not answering it. Anyway, they want to make everything smaller and smaller these days. I'm sorry but smaller does not mean better. Those smaller boom boxes of the 1990s never shook the walls like the huge ones of the 1980s. I have a feeling these small gadgets that are supposed to phase out CDs won't have the quality of CDs either. What's up with these folks these days wanting everything small? I'd hate to see what they want in the bedroom. Andy is a four letter word.

Well, qualitywise they could put wave files or flac files on the card... they store up to 4 GB, so if they want to give you quality, they could.... space is not an issue! What's up with these folks these days wanting everything small? I'd hate to see what they want in the bedroom.

I don't know why anyone thinking new systems like this will take the CD out, people would still want CDs as bad as they do vinyl records.

Not to mention how easy it would be for a visitor at your house to put in their pocket and steal it. I already casually glance over at my CD towers when I have visitors to make sure there isn't an empty slot. LOL you're one suspicious dude! Suspicious my ass. Hell, it took me months to notice my Deniece Williams CD was gone. I know who took it too because he had been checking it out months earlier. I came across the empty case in the slot and didn't notice the CD gone till months later when I got in the mood to hear some Deniece. And the worst thing about it, is that the bastard's dick wasn't worth a damn. That little thing might be worth a Shitney Houston CD but not a Deniece Williams CD. Andy is a four letter word.
