I am not used to talk a lot about music or putting it down in words, neither am I good at it. I either enjoy music or I don't. I liked your mix, Moloko, Dzihan & Kamien, Rae & Christian and Herbert standing out. These are artists I follow. Sexton's mix, to me, is too fabricated. To me it seems me that he has made such a huge effort to put ten obscure songs sung by women in a mix. I can hardly imagine that this is a mix one could listen to everyday....but hey, that's me and it's all good if one can! My mix will be on in a month's time and I will try to put songs in it that I actually enjoy a lot and listen to a lot, I will not try to make the most obscure mix possible.....I'll leave that to others! It didn't take a huge effort to put this together at all. About 70% of my collection consists of female artists. These are the ones I listen to. Every day. And the mix can't be that obscure if half the people that posted knew some of the artists already. But that's okay. It's not your thing. I can understand that. it only proofs that taste can not be argued with! And there's nothing wrong with having a collection of female artists, nothing at all. I did not say it was the worst mix (I'd keep that for myself), it was just that it didn't do much for me.....and that can happen.

Forced would have been trying to find four or five male artists to make it sound more balanced. I'm wondering if I didn't make such a big deal about all the songs being sung by women, would it still have the same negative effect on you.

SupaFunkyOrgangrinderSexy said: sextonseven said: Thanks Richard! I know from the sneak peak I took that I'll be equally impressed with your mix. There's nothing hotter to me than seeing a woman onstage playing guitar and killing it. Maybe that makes me a male groupie. But seriously, I'm always interested and fascinated with what female artists have to say and even more importantly, how they say it. There's an intangible there that I totally don't get with men. A friend once told me that the reason I listen to female artists so much is because there's a woman inside me trying to get out. The vast majority of my collection, and I mean majority is female artists. I have given my comps out to folks and I came to realize that much of what my mixes are about are basically things I'm feeling and things I want to say and it is always females that manage to find the exact way to speak their heart on love. They always manage to lay their wrath down completely as well. I don't relate to the male perspective at all. Yes, yes. The artists with whom I identify the most and almost feel as one are usually the female artists. All the testosterone I hear from male artists many times turns me off. Not all the time, sometimes I do just need to be a guy when listening to music, but it doesn't happen often.

No, not at all, and it's too bad that the emphasis of this discussion lies now on the fact that the songs are by female artists.....that was not my intention! The songs just didn't do much for me, at least not in the setting in which I was listening to them and they didn't trigger me to dig deeper into them. Oh, and I think it's awesome that there is so much music to choose from, whatever fills your heart can have a totally different effect on someone else....* *: note to Serious: except TTD, ofcourse.....'cause he sucks monkey-ass! Hues of Longing - It's tough not to love a band called Mors Syphilitica. But for its own part, this song is quite beautiful. Not being able to make out the verses, I most immediately find some rapport with the airy guitar work. Gorgeous lines. But the lyrics are equally evocative. Good opener.
Den Die Toten Reiten Schnell - Would it be glib to simply comment, "Dark?!" I don't know much to say about this particular track, but the Goth scene, both visually and aurally, commands a mastery of pathos like few others. This is a quintessential example. This song is just average to me, but I'd certainly listen to more of this band, based on this track. Cage in a Cave - Very successful introduction to this band! I too enjoy string embellishment in rock -- I'm ever the sucker for an epic sound. But I really do also enjoy the folky full-on story (you don't get that much these days), and there's something endearing in the lead's quirky voice. I could easily get hooked on this -- it almost reminds me of a Schoolhouse Rock song! Eternal Flame - Love it. The harmonies are simply seductive and the lyrics simple, but smart. At first I thought I'd be annoyed by the repeated last line in every stanza, but it turns out they actually make the song! And I don't know why, but there's something comfortably Chrissy Hyndesque about the lead's voice. Very nice. Come, Sing Me a Song -- I'm all over the 60's vibe, and there's nothing I don't like about this track. The vocal harmonies are nostalgic, the horn punctuations are brilliant, and the tempo is at the perfect spot between lazy and danceable. Sounds like a late summer ride down a coastal highway, top down and hair blowing in the wind. (Or, in my case, buzzed scalp blowing in the wind. ) God Knows - The symphonic embellishment is interesting, but this song is generally somewhat annoying. Can't quite place my finger on why, though. I Like a Boy in Uniform - Aside from the fact I can imagine Tracy Ullman singing this in a naughty little video, this track does nothing for me. Te Quiero Mucho - Love the musical track, but the vocals were a bit too campy for my mood when I listened. I didn't much like this track, but something about the drive of the song makes me suspect I'd like other stuff from Naty. I'll need to hear more of her before I make a decision on her one way or the other. Gary's Song - I hear centuries of blues in Alice Smith's voice! Very, very rich. This song is average -- nowhere near the top or bottom of your mixtape -- but it would absolutely prompt me to check out Smith's album... and I'd LOVE to hear what this girl sounds like singing straight blues. Scratch Your Name - Great closer! As you said, it's quite empowering and it's easily the most rocking track on your mix. I'd not only listen to these girls' album, but I'd go see them live, having only now just heard of them. Thanks for this intro. ...This is a mix I'd return to again and again. There were a few soft spots to me, but they weren't horrible; and the good songs were great! Also, like magnificentsynthesizer's mix, this compilation was peppy, even as it featured some of the darkest songs, vis-a-vis the little bit of Goth aesthetic, that we've heard so far. A great balancing act here. Ὅσον ζῇς φαίνου

There's a lot of humor in their back catalog too which is something to which I don't normally subscribe, but it works with them. The Pipettes got me into Tracey Ullman coincidentally.
