UPDATE: Billboard.com also now has an article about Janet's departure from IDJ, which includes the same statement that was released to People Magazine a short time ago, however the statement in this article includes this extra sentence:

"Always known to break new ground and set trends, Janet's departure from Island makes her one of the first superstar artists to have the individual freedom to promote their work through a variety of avenues such as iTunes, mobile carriers and other diverse and innovative channels."

The Billboard.com reporter then goes on to speculate that Janet could possibly sign a deal with Live Nation Artists:

Moving forward, Jackson would seem to be a natural fit at Live Nation Artists, which is already home to Jay-Z, Nickelback and Shakira. A Live Nation spokesperson was unavailable for comment on the subject.

She's one of the first artists that I can recall that marketed a 3" remix cd in a movie theater.

Sorry, I've never really understood all the hype about Janet. What new ground did she break and what trends has she set? confuse Her earlier stuff like Control and Rhythm Nation was cool, but other than that, I just dont why she's considered to be some great artist or trendsetter.

According to some sources, CONTROL and RHYTHM NATION paved the way for the sound of today's R&B because of its new jack swing sound or something like that.

Those 2 albums defined her as a person and female icon...but then she lost it with all the sex talk and cooing.

I agree with you. She tried to rekindle some of the non-sex stuff with songs like "What About", but since the "janet." album, she has concentrated on sex and that's not breaking new ground. I wish she would do another "concept" type album. Maybe one with a new feel like TVR and a message like RN.

She should create new music JUST FOR THE FANS - not the mainstream, and distribute directly to us. 2 new songs a month, pay a small subscription fee. NO distributor, NO label. And tour every couple years until she's 50ish. Fuck radio, fuck the charts.

I remember her saying during the damita jo era that she wants to make an album about racism and anger, we haven't gotten that, maybe now she'll do it.

Despite her being "into sex" for the past 15 years as most put it, she still has many underrated gems on all her albums since, including the recent ones too. Songs like Enjoy, Can't Be Good, Spending Time With You, I Want You and many others are great.

She can cover whatever the fuck topic she wants. She and Michael could sing the phonebook and as long as there's that hunger, energy, and passion to it and they are dancing, I'm into it.

I would love to hear a jazzy Brazilian album, there is this song called Surrender that's always on the radio and it's jazzy and ambient and sounds a little bit like janet, she would be excellent at that

I honestly feel the labels were telling her to continue to record the sexual stuff because "it sells". I honestly believe that. At some point, I think Janet, while she loves it, hates that it's part of her now.

Janet should go back to her roots and do a sit-com or some form of television.

People just aren't feeling her as a music star anymore. If Rhianna had done Feedback, that song would have been #1. I don't think that has to do with promotion, it has to do with who young people are listening to.

Oh, and that woman is hardly fat. I wish I had a body like that...and I'm over a decade younger!

there are still people feeling her or else nobody would be excited about her current tour, why should she give up putting out new music just because she no longer sells millions? as a prince fan do you want him to hang it up because he dont sell like justin timberlake?

I love Janet. Really. I have All For You, Damito Jo, 20 Y.O., Discipline, and a ticket to see her in October. However, I think she needs to take a break from music and focus on something else. Not necessarily forever, but long enough for her to miss making music...and for people to miss her making music.

I know you weren't comparing Janet to Prince, however, Prince is a musician and on another level of artistry whereas Janet is pretty one-dimensional. Prince is not a "pop star" anymore (and hasn't been for a while), but I think a "pop star" is all Janet can be in music. If she's not "pop"--as in "popular"-where does she fit in in the music industry of today? Nowhere. Hence, movies and television. She can kill two birds with one stone: regain popularity and regain some focus.

But, I also agree with Soul Alive about a Vegas gig. That could work.

its not about comparing her and prince musical styles,my point is why should she stop making music just because she no longer sell like she did in her prime and the question was as a prince fan would you want people saying he shouldnt record any new music simply because he dont sell like these young pop stars. so you are saying that prince is not a pop star huh? thats funny because there was just a thread on this org claiming that prince, mj and madonna are the last of the true pop stars.as far as price's artistry and all that what exactly does it have to do with what we are talking about,he still dont sell records like he did in his prime.i also dont agree with janet being one dimensional, i mean she's covered pop,r&b, a lil hiphop and even some rock and has been very successful at it all.at this stage in her career she dont need to 'fit in' she needs to make music for her fans and continue to tour, thats all i was saying.

I agree with this statement.
Just because Prince no longer sells like he use to back in the 80s and 90s, it doesn't make him less of an artist because he truly, truly is. I remember reading an interview he'd given. He so arrogantly put it that, he IS music. But, at the time i didn't understand nor did i agree with his statement. The fact is he loves music so much and has such unwaivering passsion for it that it becomes well, him.
Now, as much as Janet loves music and to perform maybe, just maybe she should become so enthralled with music itself. Maybe she should become so enthralled with the poetry of life itself and bring it forth in her recordings. I truly think she did with the song, ENJOY and GOD'S STEPCHILD.
But, at the same time none of us truly knows what's going on in her head but her unless she decides to share her thoughts with the fans or those who happen to visit her website.
In any event i truly wish all of the older artists well, due to music for lack of a better word going straight to hell!
