What's your fave french Tune/Artist/Band

I came across this while browsing old threads.

http://prince.org/msg/8/271725?&pg=1

I'm so ashamed that I missed this that I felt like starting another one.

Here some Sinclair to begin with
headbang (nothing jingoistic in this thread, I'm just curious to know)

Is there any place of refuge one can flee from this insanity

a song we were forced to learn
in FRENCH I, in high school
"Au Chan De Lise" or something like that
GOD GAWD I hated that song
but I find myself humming it
sometimes unconciously LOL

Might be some old folk french song, or some nursery rhyme, I tried to google it but it doesn't ring any bell, perhaps I could tell you about if you find the lyrics somewhere... Sounds like you'd rather forget it. I often find myself humming "Hickory Dickory Dock" just the same giggle

We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

OMG, finally! You are the first person I've ever come across who actually knows who this dude is. Love him and have practically all his albums. I almost went to Paris just to see him live.

RIP Charles pray

I remember his last concerts announcement in Paris (Oct 1999), telling myself I wouldn't witness a living legend if I wasn't going (such as James Brown, Henry Salvador, Luther Vandross...), he was 86 at the time.

OMG Back atcha!! I didn't even know someone ould hear about him in the US, according to me he'd deserve to be more popular than he actually is in France, but unfortunately french funk doesn't touch a big audience. "Mon idole" is my fave track, thanks to this song I found out he was a Prince fams himself. (speaking about doing the splits and so on...) headbang

mispelling edit

MYLÈNE FARMER

I have an eternal love for a song of hers called "Sans logique"

Both song and video are very dark. I love when pop goes dark and depressing!

I know, I thought he'd be much more popular. I haven't been able to get his albums since he went independent so I haven't heard his last two releases I think. Still my fave album is Le Bonne Attitude.

One of my first musical crush, the epitomy of melancholy. I'd try to make her dance moves in front of the TV when I was a kid. lol

She also was the first artist I saw in concert (I was 12) and her talents goes furthers than her songs, each one of her videos art film work of art, each song becomes a tales to tell... By boyfriend is a fan as well, he owns almost all her dvds...

Poetic lyrics and hidden messages...

I admire her because she is pure melancholia...As a pure melancholic and depressive person, she's like a kindred spirit.

Her Anamorphosée album is like the best rock/pop album of the 90's.

Also she's one of the most daring video artists. Makes Madonna and MJ seem like schoolkids,

Did you try to order his CDs on amazon? You can get some for cheap from it (I just checked).

ROTFL... man I wish I could rewind time
and record myself doing that...

that was the year I had to
go to my zoned school
(I attended a magnet school in HS)
so I was actin out every chance I got lol

By far I do prefer Axelle. Carla is a good songwritter, her voice isn't bad either but there's something more soulful about Axelle Red

A thread about French artists and nobody has yet mentioned Serge Gainsbourg? Scandalous!! Histoire Du Melody Nelson is one of the best albums ever in any language, the stuff he recorded with Bardot is great too!

I was expecting someone to mention Gainsbourg actually. My favourite Gainsbourg song is "Couleur Café"

I agree 100%! Serge gets my vote for favorite French artist as well as Histoire de Melody Nelson for favorite French album.

However my favorite song would be Serge's duet with his wife Jane Birkin "69 Année Érotique":

Funny how when it comes to french music people only refer to vintage french artists like Edith Piaf, Charles Aznavour, Serge Gainsbourg, etc.

Like them or not there are many, many contemporary french artists just to name a few (too lazy to link videos):

Zazie
-Ródeo
-Je suis un homme
-Cyber

Myléne Farmer
-Dégéneration
-Apelle mon numero

Kyo
Pascal Obispo
M. Pokora
Raphael
Pauline
Emmanuel Moire
Superbus
Natasha St-Pier
Melissa M
Jenifer
Calogero
Vanessa Paradis
Olivia Baum
Daran
Anggun
Sinik
Florent Pagny
Shy'm razz
Laam
Axelle Red
Cyril Paulus
Helene Segara

My favorite native French act would probably be sisters Laura and Chris Maine, who made up the now-defunct '90's R&B duo Native.

As far as the wider Francophone world, I'm really feeling Quebecois singer Julie Crochetiere right now.
