unique said: bboy87 said: Fam, I'm very familiar with both Michael AND Prince's work. Anybody who frequents this particular forum knows that for sure. I know about Jeffery Daniels contribution to Michael's dancing along with Robot Dane, Poppin Sam, Michael "Boogaloo Shrimp" Chambers and Vincent Patterson. I said that the choreography to Shake Your Tailfeather was similar to the routine to Thriller, but they are quite different. If they lifted the routine from Shake Your Tailfeather, what was Michael Peters' contribution? Yes, it's true, the tours post 1989 are as great, but that's the thing. Michael's tours are about theatrics. People who have worked on those tours since the Victory Tour can tell you that. it's clear you obviously aren't particularly familiar with either prince's or michael jacksons work, or the origins of it, Really, go back and look at my threads like my Thriller 25 thread or my recent one about Michael's unreleased work. I'm not some naive poster who has only listened to a couple of records , especially considering I helped out a book on Michael's music and how did this thread become a MJ vs Prince thread YET AGAIN? anyway..... That being said, Michael IMO is one of the best, but my pick would probably be either Sammy Davis Jr. or JB [Edited 9/19/08 23:16pm] it's interesting how most MJ fans skip the parts about music and focus so much on the dancing as the important part of his live show, particularly when at 50 he probably can't even do it anymore, thus if he did tour again he couldn't perform in the way that fans would expect or demand. the guy just needs to get a decent band that can play his back catalogue with justice, and stand still in front of a mic and sing the songs without fucking about, and he could put on a great show, even if his voice has half shot. elvis did it, he was fucked up on drugs, fat and looking awful, but his shows were still enjoyable because of the band i would say one of the best ways to judge a performance is to listen to the audio only afterwards, as the music is the main part of the show, and if you just listen to the MJ shows live you will understand exactly what i mean about how bad they sound. the band don't sound right, and MJ's voice is far from prime. he has left behind a truly awful live music legacy. i don't frequent MJ forums, but how often do people poll for a live album? and not a live dvd or video, i mean a music only live album. i doubt the majority of fans are interested in that as the main interest seems to be about the visual aspect rather than music i have a number of live MJ shows, and a lot of prince shows, and the prince shows i'll listen to again for enjoyment, but not the MJ ones, i'd rather listen to the album versions. likewise the demos, i've got a fair number of MJ demos and outtakes, and listening to them it's clear why they are unreleased, but i listen to prince demos and outtakes and wonder why they didn't get released. again, that's why MJ can't get away with releasing a one disc set of outtakes, nevermind multiple discs like prince and other artists, and that's why the reissued versions of albums have crap like interviews and remixes instead of filling the disc up with more tracks from the sessions. the reason fans keep harping on about the billie jean demo is because although it's shite, it's one of the few notable outtakes that were released. it really shows how much work quincy jones put into the early albums, and it's incredible that MJ fans deny the guy the credit he deserves for making MJ the star he was. the fact that his music took a large slide downwards after quincy left just shows this, particularly when MJ hired some of the biggest producers and writers to work on his music afterwards, and they still couldn't come up with anything that was a patch on thriller or off the wall. it's been over 20 years now since he released an decent album, and 8 years since he released any album. that's not the sign of someone you could call the greatest performer, at least not whilst they are still alive and reasonably healthy If you believe that MJ is so bad live than why do you have a numher of MJ live shows. If I find out that someone suck, I usually do not bother looking for more stuff that they did. "When Michael Jackson is just singing and dancing, you just think this is an astonishing talent. And he has had this astounding talent all his life, but we want him to be floored as well. We really don´t like the idea that he could have it all."

If I find out that someone suck, I usually do not bother looking for more stuff that they did. i wouldn't know what they were like unless i listened to them, would i? i'm a music collector, i collect music from all sorts of artists of all sorts of genres, collecting stuff good and bad it's just very dissapointing when you obtain material you are looking forward to hearing with high expectations, only for them to be shot down when you get it and the music is bad at least it seems that MJ fans are in agreement that his live shows aren't all that musically and vocally at last. sometimes it can be hard to admit the truth about something you love so much. that's the interesting thing about the prince fan sites over most other fan sites of other artists, prince fans don't all think the sun shines out his arse, they are usually very realistic and call a spade a spade, so when they think something sucks they will let you know. if prince pulled any of the shit that michael jackson did they wouldn't stand up for it and rally round him in blind faith in light of tremendous evidence to prove against them. the fanatical dedication by MJ fans who can't see, or at least admit to the truth is something they should be concerned about. the guy could sing, he could dance, but he doesn't do it anymore in public, he made a couple of great albums followed by a bunch of crap ones, we all wish he kept on making good records like the old days, but he hasn't done it in 20 years, so why the fuss over two albums released 25+ years ago? it wasn't like he wrote, produced, played and sang everything, he had a few hit singles that sold mainly due to marketing. is the power of marketing and promotion that powerful that it can convince people to overlook everything wrong that came afterwards? obviously so, at least to some people fact is, MJ wasn't the greatest live performer ever, at least not according to experienced critics who know what they are talking about. i doubt he would top any public polls either

Nothing came wrong afterwards, musically that is. After Thriller he Did The Bad and Dangerous albums which were great (don't give a shit if you don't like them).
People ignored what you wrote on the music because it's weak. All the demos of the songs he's written have the basic stucture of the song. The only things that are missing on some are a few verses, rhythm maybe slightly slower and the horns, strings etc are missing. Once you have the basic structure of the song - Melody and Chord progression all the other things are easy to implement. Also, most of those demos were also written a year or two before the final recording of the songs and done at home. The thing us they are DEMOS. You expect a demos of songs like Billie Jean and Don't stop recorded a year before final recording at Jackson's home is going to have every single background instrument and effect playing? The Billie Jean demo which was done a year and a half before final recording has the intro, the bassline same chorus and the guitar bridge. Don't Stop has the into (No ooooh!) bassline, chorus, some verses and the outro. These are two BRILLIANT and classic songs which he both wrote, delusional to think otherwise. You said previously he dances because he can't play an instrument. Wow, what shit. He dances because that's what's he loved doing since a child and is a master at doing it. Dancing at his proficiency takes natural talent and hard work. His brother Tito (sorry Tito) can play guitar but hasn't written one critically acclaimed or culturally significant song. Does that automatically render him more musically talented than his brother? Playing guitar or Piano at a DECENT level is not incredibley difficult. I'm sure if Michael wanted to play them at a skillful level he could. He's been around music his whole life so he probably can play the keyboards decently. He was actually credited to have played a few the instruments on some the songs on the Invincible album. He's also is a great beatboxer and uses that talent to write some of his songs. Countless of renowned music figures such as Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jnr and James Brown have commented of how brilliant MJ is. These are not the fans boys of MJ who you claim listen mainly to his music and disregard the music of others. Also, you tried to downplay his singing ability. That's another pile of steaming shit. In Popular music in his prime he had one of the greatest voices ever in popular music - technically, sonically and in terms of versatility. Most objective people with working ears clearly know he has a wonderful singing voice. All Music Guide in their review of Off the Wall called him a blindingly gifted vocalist. Rolling Stones magazine stated Jackson's feathery-timbred tenor is extraordinarily beautiful. They also wrote at that time he probably had the best singing voice in the world ( They said it not me). When he was freaking 11 he had an INCREDIBLE voice, one of the best ever regardless of age. It's generally regarded he's a brilliant vocalist. You're in the tiny minority oh wacky one. You also think the reason he's so popular is largely due to marketing. That's another pile of steaming shit. Firstly lets state something, when he did Off the Wall and Thriller he was physically a black man. You think that a black man in 82 (heck anytime) could became an idol to millions of kids of all races across the glode without being special and unique in some way. You think that a black man is able to sell 60 million copies of one album being the biggest selling in history without he himself being very talented. It's that easy for a black guy to become one of the biggest selling and most iconic artists ever? Give me a break. Oh, without Quincy MJ would not have been nothing. While Quincy was important in his success he's not the root of it. Micahel Jackson is. Has Quincy achieved the level of success he did with Michael with any other artist? Heck no he hasn't. Not even close. Before and around the time off the wall MJ wrote great songs as part of the Jacksons. He wrote great songs like Shake your Body down to the Gound, Can You Feel It and Hearbreak hotel and he sang them beautifuly. He' wrote great songs after that - Don't Stop, Bilie Jean, Beat it, startin something, smooth criminal and more. Oh, Prince didn't do everything like he claims. Other people contributed greatly who haven't been given the recognition they deserve. MJ never lied to make himself look better, like Prince did by saying he recieved no help and saying he played 20+ instruments when he only played about 6 and needed help. 'Prince fans don't all think the sun shines out his arse'. Lol. On this site many sure do. That passage you wrote indicates you think MJ is a pedo. He was found not guilty and I'm curious, what's this irrefutable evidence you claim MJ fans are missing? The question of him a being pedo shouldn't even figure in the discussion of his musical talents. 'it wasn't like he wrote, produced, played and sang everything' He wrote many of the memorable songs, coproduced and produced and he did sing everything. WTF didn't he sing? Fact is, experienced critics who don't favour a particular genre of music would likely list him in the top 10 of greatest live perfomer and entertainer ever. MJ may have disappointed you in some way likely because of his scandals but that doesn't detract from his talents, accomplishments and significance in popular music. Seriously, STFU. I won't respond to yours or anyone elses baloney.

first, shortrini, what a person is known for and what they actually do are two different concepts. and, as tA points out, they're two different types of artists. MJ was never a true soul singer in the tradition James, or Otis, or Al, or Jackie, et cetera. Neither was Prince. Michael was astounding. He was an event. He was a must see. But James could turn it out. Michael was Jordan. James was Shaq. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

There's a lot of revisionist history going on throughout this post...
So let's be clear hear...I PERSONALLY believe that James Brown is the greatest live performer of all time...He's the blueprint and has embarrased enough of his contemporaries onstage over the years to have that title...I mean really, when your live album (Live At The Apollo) is ranked as the greatest live album of all time by damn near everybody, that says enough... But the revisionist history comes with the overall degrading of Michael Jackson as a live performer...First let me state this: I feel that overall Prince has proven himself to be the better, more complete live performer...I just feel like his versatility gives him the advantage over Mike (James however is just a force of nature...lol)... But don't get it twisted...From 1978 to 1985 Michael Jackson whipped Prince's ass onstage...Anyone who says differently has never seen Jackson live (The Triumph tour is all the proof u need...No lipsynching; no reliance on special effects...MJ commanded the stage in ways that Prince could only dream of) during this time... No doubt that Prince was a riveting performer back then...But his stage show was more in the rock-n-roll tradition early on...By the time he injected even more of a groove into his live shows (1999 and Purple Rain tours), he still had trouble catching up to MJ...Even on a bloated tour like the Victory, MJ seemed otherworldly.... But by the Parade tour (1986), Prince caught up to MJ...How?...By showing his complete versatility....In addition to playing instruments, he danced, sung live, worked the band more in the tradition of James Brown, and was backed by superior musicians... By this time you never knew what u were going to get from a Prince show...MJ however, was beginning to rely heavily on a formula of special effects and lipsyching...You saw a little of this on the Bad tour...As exciting as that tour was, the blueprint for MJ's future live shows was being set...This was on full display by the Dangerous tour and big time with the lackluster History gigs(Speaking of Dangerous, someone put that album on the same plastic level of Bad...But Dangerous is perhaps MJ's funkiest and tightest album after Off The Wall...It is far superior to Bad..)...By the time the Sign O The Times and LoveSexy tours, Prince overtook MJ as a live performer...In their later years, Prince clearly came out as the superior performer (the fact that he evolved his live show, while MJ was stuck with doing the same routines is proof enough) In short, Michael Jackson was the greatest live performer of his generation before he started relying more on spectacle than his immense musical gifts...Saying that MJ is a overrated live performer is simply bullshit...at his peak, Jackson was as great as advertised and historically remains one of the most dynamic and iconic live acts of all time... [Edited 9/20/08 11:29am] well said michael had a bigger peak and a bigger low then prince or brown or others

Curioso and Murph nailed it lol. Some very valid points. I have nothing to add. "And When The Groove Is Dead And Gone, You Know That Love Survives, So We Can Rock Forever" RIP MJ
"Baby, that was much too fast"...Goodnight dear sweet Prince. I'll love you always

No one had a bigger peak and steeper downwards slide than Michael Jackson.

I am not a huge MJ fan, but I def rank him up there in performers.
But I think we get into this whole performer/musician/dancer/etc.. Now from what I gather most of you are putting the dancing and "singing", whether live or in the can,as the most important thing. I prefer musicians who also are vocalists. And in my opinion in that case MJ isn't even close. Also we should also say what years are we talking... cause the last yrs MJ has not been singing 100% live, nor exactly rewriting performance standards. Who would I say is better: Springsteen Prince Waits Zappa The sad part about these constant Jackson threads are that most of us can criticize Prince, I don't like his new music and he is not the most enjoyable to deal with.. But you guys are fanatical beyond belief. MJ walks on water, MJ wrote the star spangled banner, MJ can play Beethoven's 5th with his hands backwards etc.. He plays instruments according to reports and word of mouth... How is it I can see shitty artists playing instruments in the studio but THe fucking king of pop is ghost on youtube when it comes to in studio playing a instrument.. SOMEONE PLEASE POST A VIDEO OF HIM PLAYING OR STOP QUOTING IT as a testament to his talent... Music is the best...

I don't want to argue about this, because I'm not really fussed either way, but do you consider album credits to be reports? If I remember correctly, he's credited with playing a number of instruments on Blood on the Dance Floor, but I don't know if that "counts". Meh, I don't know nearly enough about this sort of thing to make a proper contribution to this thread, so instead I'll just post my own favourite live vocal performance of MJ's. I have no idea if it's considered any good by people who know about these things, but I have always loved it. [Edited 9/20/08 13:50pm]

unique said: michael jackson is one of the worst live acts ever. as he isn't highly rated as a live performer, you couldn't really say he was the most over rated live performer, but compared to what some people say about him, it's getting close
Mj doesn't sing in front of a band that doesn't even play http://www.dailymotion.co...show_musicPRINCE & THE REVOLUTION - BIRTHDAY SHOW [Edited 9/20/08 14:44pm]

Every time there's a Jackson thread, it's people's way to praise Prince and talk crap about MJ. Every huge mj thread, several will come in with "Prince plays with a real band, Prince plays guitar and other instruments on stage, Prince can play 27 instruments and has thousands of unreleased songs in the vault" etc.... "We may deify or demonize them but not ignore them. And we call them genius, because they are the people who change the world."
