I still disagree, but at least now I know exactly what I'm disagreeing with and I'm able to respect your point of view. /emo - back to fun thread!

Funny, I now find MJ’s Motown 25 performance a little boring. At the time it was the greatest thing ever but looking back at it, I’m not that moved. Been gone for a minute, now I'm back with the jump off

His 1984 performance of it was the best one. Marvin's performance on "Motown 25" is actually now my favorite performance from that show.

Now that he's been dead almost 25 years, people are giving him this respect that he never really got in life until near the very end of his life.

Greatest live performer? Y'all know the answer to that one...

Cinnamon234 said: Come on now, how can you ask that question on a Prince site?! lol. Anyway, I believe as of today Prince is the greatest living performer, but at MJ's prime, I believe that he couldn't be touched and was the best. Lip synching and sticking to the same boring, routines on his tours have done some damage to his rep as a performer. I liked how spontaneous of a performer he used to be when he was with his brothers, but everything became too rehearsed when he became a solo artist and the lip synching was downright embarrassing, especially for such a talented vocalist like Michael. The lip synching is why I hardly ever watch the "History Tour". I feel like if you can't sing live then don't even bother performing. There's no excuse for lip synching almost an entire show.
Like I said though, at his peak, he was the greatest-at least to me anyway. [Edited 9/18/08 10:31am] I was waiting for someone to say that! Everything you said along with the bolded statement was on point Cinnamon234. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

For a time I might say yes. But quickly after Thriller, he became so posed & artificial, that he lost this particular fan. How many times can I be excited by the same moves, especially when he's not just dancing from the heart but it's all planned out? Plus he wasn't even singing much of the time. The lack of spontaneity hurt my appreciation.
Not that everyone feels this way. He had a unique ability to create hype, mania. Even Prince, who had a huge wave of excitement follow him, and more on the musicology shows I saw than any since Purple Rain. But it was not the same mania seen at a Beatles or Michael Jackson concert. That particular type of mania is interesting fro a cultural standpoint, but it doesn't sweep me up. The music or the performance itself is what I look at, and James Brown, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, and even Nirvana & P-Funk at times did stuff that is more exciting than post 1987 Michael Jackson. Okay, some of y'all need to check yourselves. Not naming any names, but James Brown on wax is electrifying, much less live. He turned it out like Goldie everywhere he put his feet down.
I don't recall Prince or MJ ever saving a city from burning with the power of their voices and feet. Now, the case can be made for MJ. He was, at his peak, colossal. My favorite is Prince, he's jaw-droppingly awesome live. But let me put a word in for Sammy Davis, Jr. The man could sing, dance, impersonate and play. I hear people find religion at Springsteen concerts. Duke Ellington? John Coltrane? So many others to consider. Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

FUCKING PHENOMENAL! I repeat, PHENOMENAL! Although I think if you didn't know the songs and understand where he's coming from, it would probably be lost on you. But if you know the songs and you know what he's talking about, then you'll see it for the hellfire earth shaking experience it really is. Springsteen has something that neither Prince or MJ has. He stands for something. And it's there everytime he sings (of course, the E Street Band are a big part of that too, both sonically and symbolically). Both P and MJ seem pretty superficial by comparison. “The man who never looks into a newspaper is better informed than he who reads them, inasmuch as he who knows nothing is nearer to truth than he whose mind is filled with falsehoods and errors.”
