George Clinton & The Gangsters of Love All-Stars - Jay Leno (Tonight 9/17)

I'm not sure what the fascination is with this thing...

...but it's definitely overused on this album. disbelief

Fortunately on the standout track for me, Mathematics of Love featuring Kim Burrell, it wasn't used to destroy her vocal performance.

Ima set an alarm so I don't forget to turn the TV on around 11:15.

So that tuner thingie is what they have in the studio for people who can't sing anymore (or ever could)?

Fascinating. Not sure what my opinion of it is yet.

Wouldn't it be cool to have access to the untreated tracks so you could hear the real voice vs tweaked?

I'll have to check out the set at BB King's next month, and I'll tune in to The Tonight Show this evening, but so far I'm not exactly crazy about this album. The music is solid, mostly cover tunes, I liked the "If I Was Your Girlfriend" sample on "Heaven", and how he twisted "Daddy's Home" around on "A Thousand Miles Away". It's just not the slammin' dance-beats I would have hoped for. But I am happy to hear George on the mic, singing the songs that probably mean a lot to him. Overall, really good music, super mellow. I'll just wait to see how it plays out live.

It's just a slight reference to your absence of no entries for awhile at FM. wink It's cool it's hard to keep the rhythm. We forgive you. wink

If you've heard George live lately, you know his voice is shot.
But it's just the fact that he's got that "Akorn"-effect on too many of the vocal tracks imo.

Before you get too excited, he under-utilizes Kendra on only one track - Our Day Will Come. confused

On another note, and after another listen, the cover of this CD is all wrong for this music. George Clinton is one of my greatest hero's; I'm really really hoping this music and this CD is not George's way of saying goodbye to this galaxy, but the thought keeps crossing my mind as I listen to it.

Just got done watching the performance on The Tonight Show, and I can't quite put my finger on it, but something doesn't seem quite right. Something's wrong with George. And I mean something more than usual. The whole performance seemed off, even with the other players. I'm hoping all is well in Funkadelica.

Killing time here while I wait for the Mothership to drop some of the P on me.

John McCain's daughter, Meagan is on. What an airhead!

Ok, back after the jam... if you can call it that.

This performance didn't do much for me at all.

For all those instruments and voices the arrangement of Aint That Peculiar left a lot to be desired; very sketchy and demo-like, as if they had the bare bones of an idea and were just barely starting to flesh it out.

Minimalist P-Funk? I don't think it works.

And then the surprise segue into Sly's Take You Higher didn't seem to work at all either...at least for me.

So at first blush I'm pretty disappointed with the Gangsters of Love band.

Still wondering about that new Clinton produced Sly Stone joint that's rumored to be in the works though.

disbelief too bad...she is one of his best assets....I recorded the Leno show, but have not had the chance to watch it yet....was Kendra on it?

I wrote to her yesterday afternoon, but I have not heard back as of yet.....she is pretty good about acknowledging her emails, so I suspect I will hear from her soon.

First of all, I like the new album, George Clinton And His Gangsters of Love.
I know I'm in the minority when I say that, espcially around here but there ya go. It's a tribute to the art of OG slow jamz. It's not a Funk thang this time. Even know it rears it's head every now and then.
I understand the importance and love of classic P-Funk. I wave the Flag! But that was then and this is now. Have I liked all of GC's post "classic" material, hell no. But am I glad he's still trying new things and releasing new stuff and still playing out? Hell Yeah!
I thought the Jay Leno performance rocked! Sloppy, messy, chaotic? Yes. Fun, rocking, forward thinking. Again, Yes. Just my 2 cents. wink

I am starting to feel it a little more on that note. Once getting over the 'sort of' disappointment of no new dance-floor anthems being on it, I have listened to it with different ears. I even find a certain richness in the vocals by George that many feel are shot. There was always an unique sort of edginess to George's vocals. And while matured, weather-beaten and worn, a certain battle-tested/tempered steel sort of sharpness slices through the rather thickly woven funk. There are a few cuts on there now that I feel are absolutely beautiful.

For the type of songs recorded here, and under the moniker of "Gangster's of Love", yeah; I'm starting to feel it a bit more. And I can appreciate that it's new music covering old standards with a flavor that's slightly skewed. After much reflection, I think I'm gonna be okay with this one.

I couldn't agree with you more. And, I might add, very well put.
This aint a Funk thang although there's some funk on it. Once you get past that and the fact GC is a bit crispy (duh) then ya might enjoy it. For those who don't. Go ahead GC! cool

I thought so too. I was prepared to be disapointed because of comments read around here but I thought they rocked. I know better than to rely on others opinions. I'll gather my own. wink

For me, the Jay Leno performance still had some difficulties, even though the music from the CD continues to grow on me - I'm really digging it right about now. If I were to try to put my finger on it, I feel it's because George Clinton (and whether it's Parliament/Funkadelic or The Gangster's of Love) is such a huge musical movement, such a big band that is so heavy with funk and musical talent, that in many ways is like a freight train. It takes a while for the engine to get heated up, for the boiler to get burning, and for that train to get chugging down the track, that it's hard to just give him a 3 minute spot on TV and expect them to hit it in that time restraint. But rest assured, once that Funk Train gets moving, you better jump out the way or get run down! When you see P-Funk live, the band is out there for a good 30 minutes or more before George even takes the stage. They often don't have that same luxury on television.

I saw Rick James in much the same way, it was hard for him to come across in a 3 minute hit on Letterman or whatever, but to see him live was an event of a lifetime. Whereas you can give Prince, by contrast, a 3 minute spot on TV, and he'll hit the mark with laser precision.

I lost count back in the 90's having attended in excess of 2 dozen P-Funk concerts by then, but am absolutely looking forward to seeing George & The Gangster's at BB King's in Times Square next month.
