Kelis: Not Guilty, Plans Lawsuit September 14 Link Kelis Rogers-Jones was acquitted Thursday of disorderly conduct and resisting arrest in an incident in Florida stemming from March of last year. Kelis, who’s married to rap star Nas, was accused of screaming racial profanities and rushing two female Miami Beach police officers that were working undercover as prostitutes. In a Miami Beach court, Judge Arzola found no evidence to prove that Kelis interfered with any police investigation, and she wasn’t responsible for any disorderly conduct. Kelis’s lawyer, Ira N. Loeway, says the singer now plans to file a civil suit against the Miami Beach Police for “a violation of her civil rights and unlawful arrest.” “Racial profiling is a very serious matter,” Kelis said in a statement released today. “Unfortunately, most victims learn to deal with this form of harassment in their daily lives because they feel that they don't have a voice or because they're not able to absorb the costs to legally fight it in court. I hope that this sheds light on the fact that wearing a uniform and carrying a badge does not allow you to act above the law." | |
