Though to speak on point. I think this is direct result of Berry Gordy's policy with Motown's house band. He highlighted the singer over and above the band. Much to the detriment of many top-notch talented players.

I'm of the opinion that the late 80s early 90s (sans the "gangsta" garbage) Hip Hop hasn't been expanded upon. I still feel that Public Enemy was the most original and most challenging Hip Hop group in the genre's history. There is quality in the genre today, but it's a small percentage...at least if you go by the Hip Hop featured on politicized/monopolized Clear Channel radio (I know you can't use radio as a barometer). That gangsta stuff is violent and superficial, and trash as far as I'm concerned.

Oh, and even more on the subject; I've been mourning BANDS in R&B/Soul/Funk ever since the 70s.

I think most material that Wu-Tang has put out, including all solo artists material and affiliate groups (Sunz of Man, KillArmy, etc.) is original and slept on.

In particular, the Rza is a genious.

You really do have to sift thru the bullshit...but there is some good stuff out there still. Most recently I've gotten into Cormega and the Gravediggaz new album.

First, there is a difference between Hip Hop and rap. Hip Hop is a culture. It's clothes, music, and a lifestyle. I don't believe the music has died out but it has expanded so that the mainstream media only pumps out useless music that will sell to the masses. The Roots don't ge played on Mtv. Public Enemy doesn't get played on Mtv. Who does...Nelly, Ja Rule, etc. I'm not dogging the rap artist who choose to do only "lite" rap but we are so saturated with it that it seems that HIP HOP is dead and there are no musicians anymore.

I would definitely agree that songwriting in "r&b" sucks. It is so "ghetto-fied" and "bling-bling" even in it's ballads. And notice that if an artist is a good songwriter they are not put into the category of "r&b" but into the "neo soul" category. They make wanna get my Luther album out...

One of the main problems I have with hip-hop is it's influence on today's R&B music.Nowadays,nearly EVERY R&B artist or group wants to sound just like the rappers! You got Irv Gotti producing Toni Braxton...you got Mariah Carey working with every rapper in the Top 10...you got Angie Stone using samples on every song she does (just like the rappers).When will it end? As a result,most of todays' R&B sounds just like today's hip-hop,with heavy bass,non-stop samples,and very little originality or fresh ideas.The mentality seems to be,"why bother to write and play real instruments when I can just sample instead?".

Don't get me wrong,I like hip-hop but mostly the old stuff from the 80s.

Rap was the last Important Music Statement IMHO.it had edge before Suits got ahold of it&turned it out like a Trick.I Miss the Bands of Back in the day&the Battles easily.Rap has become too Brand-Name&Predictable&that is the furthest thing from the truth about it.it's a Very Creative Outlet but it's being Controled.
