I've had a love/hate relationship with this album for years but earlier this year i decided it truly is a masterpiece.

Although it wasn't too well recieved upon its release it's now become one The Beatles' biggest sellers (and rightly so). What surprises me the most is that in the UK this album spent less time in the charts than its predecessor (Sgt. Pepper) spent at no.1!

My picks:

Back In The USSR
Dear Prudence
Wild Honey Pie
While My Guitar Gently Weeps
Blackbird
Julia
Yer Blues
Revolution 1

It's nearly all good tho'.

It really is a masterpiece.
I never was into the Beatles. But a few years ago a friend gave me a copy off The white album/Sergeant pepper/The magical mystery tour. I have 2 admit they are great. Those guys were really ahead of time back then. The loops, the soundeffects, its all good. Very inspiring.
Prince got influenced 2, u can hear it on Around the world in a day.

One of the best albums ever made. Funny how for many years it didn't have the respect it deserves. I remember Paul on The Anthology saying "Its the bloody Beatles White Album", which is exactly true.
Every song is over and above what most bands have ever even aspired to. Even Ringo's songs are brilliant, Don't pass Me By is classic.
A person who doesn't have this album isn't qualified to discuss The Beatles. The best band ever, by some margin.

My favourite song on the album
Which is why I why I don't see the reason that Paul doesn't get the kudos and respect he deserves. Its as though John wrote the best songs and Paul was shit, which is complete bollocks.

Oh yeah, you can't forget the jam "Everybody's Got Something to Hide Except for Me & My Monkey". That's the Beatles at their funkiest!

I think John gets more props b'cos he's dead.

Artists rarely get the credit they deserve until they snuff it.

This was the album where you, the listener, can obviously tell that the Beatles were breaking up. John was singing about politics & cynicism, Paul was the hitmaker, George was still on his spiritual journey, and Ringo was still the happy one who got caught up in the madness.

Ironically, Abbey Road was the very last album that the Beatles recorded, although not the last one they released. I rank it MUCH higher than the White Album.

nuts

Please don't exaggerate needlessly. I may b a Beatles saddo but that song's an absolute stinker.
mad It irritates me no end that they let Ringo drone over Good Night. Ok, so it's no While My Guitar... but his vocal renders it unlistenable. Did they think that was funny or what?

Supernova said:"Abbey Road. I rank it MUCH higher than the White Album."

And even it's not perfect - Maxwell's Silver Hammer rolleyes
any1? Can u imagine John's reaction when Paul ran that clunker by him ?!

Pagey

The White Album & Abbey Road have been trading the top spots on my fave albums of all time list for about 15 years now.

The White Album is almost flawless...except for Revolution 9 and Goodnight. But since those tunes are at the end and every other song is a classic...those 2 fuck ups are forgiven.

I think John hit a peak in songwriting on here...Yer Blues, I'm So Tired, Sexy Sadie, Happiness..., Glass Onion, and Dear Prudence are all so excellent it's hard to find a word that justifies them enough.

Paul is also in top form and showed he is not all about sappy (but great) ballads and pop songs...Helter Skelter is harder than anything else that was out there at the time. Also Why Don't We Do It In The Road is just plain funky. Paul fuckin rocked on The White Album.

George found himself on this one imo. He always wrote quality tunes but I think all four of his tunes here are just as good, if not better, than anything Lennon/McCartney wrote. My Guitar Gently Weeps is the best song on the album.

Finally Don't Pass Me By will forever be my favorite Ringo song...period.

And even though it's not the ONLY song I always skip on that album, even so, I rank it higher than The White Album overall. The whole first side could be tepid and I'd feel that way based on solely on side 2.

Do you know what John's reaction was when he found out McCartney's idea consisted of that now-famous suite of songs on side 2? He HATED the concept. McCartney scores. Brilliantly. John was wrong.

Sorry if i gave u the impression that i'm 1 of these hard-headed Lennonites, who laud everything John touched 2 the heavens, whilst needlessly dissing Paul at every opportunity. shake Nothing could b further from the truth!

Of course, Paul was not merely the perfect foil 4 John, as many would like 2 have us believe, but 1 of the great songwriters in his own right nod & i agree that he made an invaluable contribution 2 Abbey Rd (as did George via 2 of his classics).

However, having said that, a clunker is still a clunker; i have a hard time envisaging either John or George putting their names 2 Maxwell's Silver Hammer (or Ringo's Octopus's Garden either 4 that matter!) with even the slightest conviction or enthusiasm.

It certainly seems 2 enjoy an enduring popularity with the fans.confuse Just Don't Ask Me Why though.

I personally prefer Abbey Road...Her Comes The Sun-Her Majesty is arguably some of the best music they ever created. Lennon's "Coming Together", and Harrison's "Something" are exquisite as well.
