The album was fairly hit & miss, but that song is really good. The piano sounds very weird, though, not natural.

I wrote a thread about this song doubled with "Ruby Tuesday" a long time ago in this forum. The reason that I did was because I obviously love those 2 songs. I also wrote a thread on "Paint It, Black" which I also adore to death. I like the Stones a lot. "She's A Rainbow" & "Ruby Tuesday" was to the Stones what "Strawberry Fields Forever" /"Penny Lane" were to the Beatles. I think these types of songs by the Stones are largely over looked and highly underrated. Their very whimsical and I think it showed the versatilty of the band.

I think that SAR and RT are NOT to the Stones what SFF and PL were to be Beatles simply for the fact that the Beatles were moving into completely new territory, whereas the Stones were only doing this kind of music because all their friends (most notably the Beatles) were doing it.

there are good Stones cuts from that period, but I just don't think the sound/look/style/lyrics suit them.

love that song. I wish the Stones would take a risk and ditch their "Stonesy" sound and go back to this! It's only been, what, 40 years since they did this kind of stuff

Granted, I KNOW the Stones were biting off of the Beatles style wise and I only mentioned the Beatles two cuts as an example to She's A Raibbow" & "Ruby Tuesday in terms of that I think their all great songs in the same vein. To me, it wasn't about WHO pioneered the sound first and who was the MOST legitimate and all that. I KNOW Cream's "Sunshine OF Your Love" was inspired by Hendrix but it still doesn't mean the song isn't bangin'.

yeah there's that notion that the Stones weren't being totally true to themselves at that moment but were following the amazing things happening at that time (and not just on Beatles albums) But even if it wasn't the cool, bluesy Stones, it was still the Stones at prime time and making some really good stuff.

And to me, I very much think the sound, look, & lyrics definately fit them. I think it fit the Stones as much as it SGt. Pepper/Magical Mystery fit the Beatles. Neither group were like that when they first came out the gate and both dropped that and jumped "hippy-ish" (especially the Beatles) in image after that. Mick jumped "satanic" smile for a little bit. At least untill Altamont went down.
