basicly it a accumilation of 100 gay people in the industry top 10 albums lists . for whatever thats worth..but they did explain how they come up with it.

>>>we polled more than 100 actors, comedians, musicians, writers, critics, performance artists, label reps, and DJs, asking each to list the 10 albums that left the most indelible impressions on their lives. After receiving responses from Boy George, Rufus Wainwright, Cyndi Lauper, the Indigo Girls’ Amy Ray, Candis Cayne, Perez Hilton, Nate Berkus, Jake Shears, John Cameron Mitchell, Wilson Cruz, Justin Bond, Darren Hayes, Junior Vasquez, Bruce Vilanch, Janis Ian, the Cliks, Ari Gold, Holly Johnson, and a slew of others, we tallied the results to determine our top-100 list. <<<<

But there's no reasoning behind it. I know these lists don't mean anything anyways, but with that approach they could've just asked any 100 people on the street for their opinion. shrug Not everything on this list is obviosuly "gay" or associated with popular gay culture. (Nirvana? Funny, I don't remember Kurt and Co. getting a lot of love at the last Pride parade....) so some reasoning as to why they were included and how they arrived at the ranking would've been cool.

They asked 100 music-related celebrities. That's different than 100 people on the street. Nevermind was included because that's the answer many people gave. The ranking apparently would be something like, the more mentions an album got then the higher up on the list.

does Kurt Cobain wearing a dress on Headbangers Ball count? or whatever the show was...

It's not just that. Kurt has always supported gay rights and said in an interview with The Advocate in 1993 that he was "gay in spirit". Also Pat Smear was a member of the band near the end.

Kurt says a bit more about feeling queer in school in that movie About A Son (2006) with the voice overdubbed interviews.

Oh, I know all that. But in spite of those moments, Nirvana's never been regarded as "gay" music, so some reasoning should be in order.

i think they get an honorary gay pass because kurt was so vocally gay-friendly, as other people have mentioned in this thread. i don't think kurt was gay or even necessarily bi. he might have been curious, but i think he was more "queer" than "gay" (meaning he shared the sensibilities moreso than the sexuality) and that he also felt a kindredness as an outsider with a group of people who have largely been considered outsiders to mainstream society. i think a lot of gay folks who were around at the time remember that and still appreciate it. i know i do.

Queer people related to it. shrug That's all it took to make this list! A bunch of gay people nominating the albums that moved them. That's why it looks like the org made it.
