Examples?
There are 16 actual songs on there. Which ones do you think are "crap"?

My Need
Go Deep (has REALLY dated)
Empty
Every Time (ZZZZZ)
Tonight's The Night
Anything

Had to get the CD out to view them over there because they sure as hell aren't in my iTunes library.

my need is one of my favorites on the album, i can do without go deep but its not really crap, i dont care for empty or tonights the night, i love anything

masterpiece?

no.

but i love it.

it's her most interesting release.

and yet her most irritating, for some reason.

you can hear her simultaneously starting to coast, yet also getting about as "out there" as she is ever going to get.

^ Agreed with the last comment.

It's a shame she never grew again and just regressed into the pathetic giggly banality of All For You.

When I first heard it it so a masterpiece, but I do listen to AFY and DJ a lot more. Yet for the past three days I have been playing The Velvet Rope and really heard the track I find outstanding.

Velvet Rope
My Need
I Get Loneley
Rope Burn (yum)

Velvet Rope is my favorite Janet CD from beginning to end. "My Need" is a gem. This CD was experimental and personal for Janet, and although it didn't sell as much as RN or the Janet CD, as a whole, it's her best. I would like her to experiment again.

I'll have to say no. I like the album a lot, but it isn't what I'd consider flawless. OTOH, Rhythm Nation 1814 is a masterpiece -- easily her best album IMO.

I think some of the songs have aged like fine wine, and others scream 90's. Although janet. is a stronger album, and RN is her strongest album to date, I think VR has aged the best so far.

I always thought Go Deep sounded very 80's during the release as well and wondered if she was regressing, but the melody is so good.

I also think Accept Me should have been in place of tonight's the night cause it had better vocals and a similar beat.

It was also the time I became a huge janet fan when she was promoting VR, though I'd been a fan since the late janet./design of a decade eras.

Masterpiece! It's a classic right up there with Rhythem Nation in my world
I love this album always, it's got a good mix of everything: sexy songs, pop songs, songs with a message, etc..
If you will, so will I

Critics called it her best work and although sales were slow and people started hating on janet, I think it's aged well as an album and I still love it, although I don't know if it's her best ever. Sometimes I love it and other times I'm just not in the mood for it.

What is your honest take on this album? Please stick to the music, no jokes about coffee enemas, thanks smile

great production,,

great lyrics

great sound

I think it's the best of Janet. I really thought she was going to continue in this direction musically but it seems it was her one big high point.

It really makes me wonder what was done so differently on TVR that couldn’t be recreated on anything since then.

after VR I kept getting disappointed cause I expected deeper stuff, but now I'm used to it and she's fun-pop/r&b music and I love a lot of it.

I remember after VR there were rumors about her doing a hip hop album and working with swiss beats, and she did do duets with busta rhymes and blackstreet/eve/ja rule, so I can't help but wonder if she felt pressure from the industry to "conform" again.

I think its great that she did not continue in this direction, I really wouldn't want to hear two simmiler albums like 20YO and the new one, very simmiler to me.
I do think that Damita Jo was her last high point and after that she became average.

20 YO and Discipline are nothing alike. Discipline is edgy, dancy and filled with good hooks, 20 YO, though nice, is like a stale version of it.

I wouldn't want it to sound like TVR but have the strength and variation of TVR. If she had taken that and put it into that Brazilian album she's always talking about but can never actually record or something else, I think that would be interesting.

I don't want her to really attempt to do another TVR because then she'll be chasing something that may be unobtainable. It was that moment and it's over. But that sort of energy and maturity I would like in another album. I don't think that's really happened since.

To me Discipline sounds like just as stale with more of a pop/dance edge. They sound all made up and doesn't flow. The includes are nearly a dacade out of date, computers and all, very Fanmail. When you listen to it you can't help but thin "you can do so much better!'.

I see what you mean. But with me when it comes between great nonsensical pop hooks and maturity, I would have to pick nonsensical pop hooks, its just more fun to listen to.

This is a classic album and one of the best in the 90's. This album means so much to me personally but I'm sure that is a bit obvious hence my screen name. cool .
I am convinced Beyonce's career would not be where it is, if she had dark skin.
